Salmon

In general, from where does the salmon that you consume mostly come from?

I always try and go for Irish as I'm under the impression
that salmon farming in Ireland has been less aggressive
and polluting.

That may be a misconception on my part, but there you go.

Always try and get wild red salmon if i can, Alaskan as a preference but i dont refuse to eat farmed salmon just prefer the taste of the red salmon either tinned or fresh

Can't remember exactly why but I was always told to go for Alaskan salmon, tinned or fresh.

With a nice bit of peppery rocket in a wholemeal roll.

Its supposedly leaner and has more healthy fats (omega 3+6) than farmed salmon as it swims round the ocean and back up river to spawn etc and contains less toxins than farmed salmon which is nowadays fed with less natural food and more supplements and stuff

I don't like salmon. Tastes too fishy.

Tuna I like.

Sardines on toast - on some level I think it tastes vaguely unpleasant, but somehow I still find it moreish. That said, wife can't stand the sight and smell of it, so I don't think I've had sardines on toast for probably a decade or more.

I like fried chip-shop type fish from time to time, but I wouldn't know the difference between cod, haddock, etc if you hit me with them.

Aside from that, I don't really know much about fish to know what I like. Not sure I've ever tried the smoked types like mackerel or kippers.

If you don't know, it's safe to say it's Norwegian.

Mine comes from Morrisons, the value stuff. Can't tell the difference between it & the more expensive stuff to be honest. My 2yr old daughter eats most of it anyway, she can't get enough of it.

Love all fish.

The stuff we get from Sainsburys says it comes from Scotland but these days who knows.....there's probably traces of Romanian seahorse in there somewhere.

Said it yonks ago I know, but repeat statement is:

Best I've ever tasted was in the Amstel hotel back in about '71 from the Ice Cold Viking fiords, and I don't like the variety she buys for herself as it's flavour and smell put me off it. :

Choice cuts of fresh Tuna done on the George Foreman grill are my favourite but quite pricey. :

I think that's the thing ZF:
It need to smell almost of nothing to be really good salmon.

Stuff used for Sashimi is great but bloody expensive.

The Alaska is great if you can get it but mostly it's smoked
so reduces what you can use it for.

Just consumed mine. It is 'fresh' I believe, however I have noticed a little more ponginess of late. It also tends to be smoked now so maybe it's Alaskan.

Same here but only on public holidays - any public holiday, bank holiday etc gets supermarkets warring with each other over fish prices (and lamb and other stuff too) so we walked out of Morrisons this easter with two whole salmon at £3.75 a Kilo, it's £12.99 for the mingy prepared portions you buy

We had river cobbler the other week, it actually tasted really nice.

After I read up on what it was and where it came from we won't be buying it again.

River Cobbler sounds a lot more appetising than far eastern pond farmed Catfish doesn't it?

Dog fish is nice though, we used to catch it whilst sea fishing. Also known as Rock Salmon.

We eat quite a lot of River cobbler, it's a nice meaty fish at a very reasonable price. Coated in flour & lightly fried in olive oil and served with fresh parsley sauce.
