You see an accident, what do you do?

I was walking down Charing Cross road yesterday and heard an awful grinding crunching noise. Looked round and when the bus moved there was a guy on a scooter had been knocked off by a car out of my view. He was fine but shaken up, but the car drove off!!

What amazed me was that no one that actually saw the accident stopped. I clocked the cars number plate and stopped as did two other guys, but none of us saw it actually happen. I cannot believe that no one stopped

That's appalling. I've voluntarily stopped to give my details as a witness on a couple of occasions - whenever I could help to be honest.

The only possible reason I would not stop is if others already had, and I didn't feel that I could offer any assistance over that whioch was already being given.

Twice I've been hit by other drivers over the years and the Insurance company has gone 50:50 because there were no witnesses.

What Bazza said

Always stop if your first at the scene. Even just being there to talk to someone who's in shock can help.

Re: You see an accident, what do you do?

ive seen plenty and stopped several times, but not always if others have stopped. one on the M5 a few weeks ago involving an upturned car, 3 trucks had already stopped to help so i decided not to add my truck to the scene. i did stop when a truck ran into the back of a little old woman at some traffic lights(it was her fault) she was very shaken but unhurt, but called an ambulance anyway as she was very old, and you never know, i even offered a lift home as she had no relatives to call, she had no idea what to do or who her insurance co was, i told her to ring the AA, i left my contact details as i had witnessed it all, i never heard anymore.

Aye! I got hit by a car that ran a red light when I was turning right once.. I'd have been mullah'd if a couple of Scottish lads hadn't stopped to say they'd seen the whole thing.

The other driver wasn't insured anyway, as it turned out.. but it was valuable anyway.

It doesn't matter if you didn't see the actual collision.. if you heard the shunt and saw the aftermath, then that in itself may be useful to the victim - position of cars etc. is often conclusive.

Mmm... if it's around Naples, and you arrive on a guy already lying on the road by his bike/vespa, in a dark place with bushes around... don't stop!

( Many who stopped for that type of staged accident got carjacked at best. )

I'd like to think that I would stop and help...but I guess we don't always act in the way we think we should
