Would you buy an Alfa Romeo SUV?

Well, would you?

No other, just "maybe".

I don't like SUV's in general, so I wouldn't buy one.

Maybe. Not for me. It'd have to be for MrsJim who openly admits to liking such things (though she really wants an old American V8 pick up in very bright red ).

If we had the money and if the Alfa SUV was decent looking, maybe. If it turned out to be that turd brown Kamal then definitely not.

I like some SUVs (missus has one eye on a new Touareg) but Alfa + SUV as a concept just doesn't sound right.

It'd have to be a proper stunner to persuade us away from something German in that department.

Quite possibly . I like the high driving position of my wife's Multipla and she won't let me replace it 'cause she loves it . A high up Alfa might do the job though.

Sorry Nev, but I think the question is wrong.

I have no need to buy any SUV. So why would I want to buy an Alfa SUV?

Then we'd have to issue a thousand questions?

It begs a question though. The clear message, so far, is that an SUV would not be on most folks shopping list, at least not most folks posting in this thread.

SUVs are incredibly popular in the UK. A well executed SUV could be hugely beneficial to AR if it was profitable and people bought into it. The trick would be to execute it in such a way that brand values are enhanced and not diminished.

So does everyone agree that if existing footprint of owners is inadequate for business, then appealing to new footprint in this way is a good thing - or are people so defensive of brand ethos that they would rather see the company struggle and possibly go under?

SIF, This seems to be Alfa's tack.

But to appeal to a new customer base you
need to capitalize on your existing brand
name.
  • Land Rover: Offroad SUV
  • Nissan/Toyota/etc. Solid, reliable. They do 4x4s
  • Porsche. Badge that'll sell anything.
  • BMW. Another badge that can sell anything.
  • Audi. Q5 is a turd. But that badge....
  • Alfa. Errrr good looking "sporty" cars that should be a hoot?

All the others have a brand and existing market to
feed into the C/SUV models. Alfa does not.

Look at me: Alfista in an SUV. I would not get an Alfa badged
SUV given the choice of one against an Ewok.
My 2nd choice would be a Jeep.
My 3rd would be a Porsche Macaque. ()
My 4th Probably the Merc GLA
5th? 500X

An Alfa SUV isn't even my 5th choice!!!

On the other hand: If I'm switching back to a midsized 4 door
petrol with at least 200 horses? New Alfa please!

Porsche has just released an explaination of their design DNA in YouTube form to make it obvious that the Cayenne and Macan are closely related to the 911.

That makes a certain amount of sense but it's fair to say that other "non SUV" brands like Bentley, Jaguar, Maserati are likely to move into it, others such as Volvo made the addition not all that long ago with the XC, so why not Alfa? Given that the list after the first two are "aspirational/lifestyle" brands rather than having some serious off-road credibility there is as much a case for Alfa as any of them. Arguably Porsche had even less right to make one because it was previously all about sports cars and nothing else. Their fans were full of righteous indignation but the SUVs sell by the bucketload and nobody minds now.
