Driving while using your mobile phone

The amount of idiots people using their mobiles while driving is ridiculous ! I think a new level of punishment needs to be brought in, I know which one I would choose but what do the great unwashed you think ?

I'm all for corporal punishment in these cases.

Now off with you and go buy a car.

I also think that sending a text message or fannying about with a smartphone whilst driving should carry a higher penalty.

At least simply talking on the phone doesn't require you to take your eyes off of the road.

I see lots of people messing about looking at their phones rather than paying attention to what they are doing.

Give it the same penalty as running a Stop sign.

When hands free kits are so easy and relatively cheap to get and bluetooth is creeping into the more basic car models now, there really is no excuse.

If you are caught texting there is now a mandatory court appearance here :IRISH: RSA.ie - New penalties for texting while driving come into force on Thursday

WOT he said, spend £20 on a Bluetooth earpiece or else ignore/switch off the phone.

Missed the "here" first time and wondered why the link to the Eire Safety Authority. Great pity that similar is not being introduced in the UK. It scares me stiff to pass a car on the motorway and realise the driver his looking down at their phone with only one hand on the wheel.

Just voted other because I think the current penalty of £100 + 3 points needs the fine, rather than the points, increased and there wasn't a suitable voting option

I read recently that using a hand-held phone while driving has been shown to be more distracting than being above the legal alcohol limit, so it should carry a similar penalty in my view.

The blatant disregard for the law, their own safety and the safety of others really gets my blood boiling ! There is no excuse for it, bluetooth earpieces are £20 and easy to use. If you're caught texting on the move you should just be banned for 3 months immediately.

The fine is of little consequence to someone earning £50,000 or £150,000, they will be more bothered by the real danger of losing their licence and possibly their job, all for the sake of a £20 earpiece.

Isn't it difficult to drive, while using a mobile, without a car?

Looks like *DF has found the solution for all those who won't/can't invest in an earpiece or handsfree kit

Sell the car

While I agree generally with what you say I am concerned that if large numbers of drivers are banned there is no effective way of enforcing the ban. Without effective enforcement someone who is selfish enough to text while driving is also going to be selfish enough to ignore the ban. They would only run the risk of losing their job if they tell their employer about the ban which, again for a selfish person, they are unlikely to do. In my experience employers only check licences at yearly, or greater, intervals so with a three month ban there is every chance of not being found out.

The last one I saw was a young girl slowing down and speeding up in the middle lane of the M62. I suspect a fine would hit her harder than a ban.

Procrastination is the thief of time

One of the reasons they've made the court appearance here ( :IRISH: ) mandatory is to cause inconvenience to the alleged offender
