Hmmm Do You Rotate Your Tyres From Back To Front & Vice Versa ?

Rotating tyres, just wondering if this is a dying practice, perhaps more so amongst the younger generations

I've often seen people commenting on how they are going to replace their front tyres as they are worn but they state that they are still on the original rears. Some seem to be impressed by this & even more so on a 3 or 4 year old car.

I wonder if they think they are saying money by not rotating as they only need to buy two tyres at a time. Maybe they can't be bothered to or they aren't capable of rotating the tyres themselves or to ask for it to be done during a service etc.

Don't rotate regularly. But if fronts are worn and rears are not, then I get the rears moved to the front and the new rubber put on the rear.

I rotate somewhere around 15K kms & keep a check on them after that & rotate if need, the 4 tyres usually have about the same wear when all 4 get replaced.

I used to rotate but have to admit I have not done it for a couple of years now.

Mine rotate everytime I go for a drive.

Yes I do swap them from front to rear, the only trouble is you end up buying 4 tyres instead of two as they all wear out at the same time.

I also regularly pick the stones from the treads.

It was only a matter of time :HEADBANG:

Yes you buy 4 together but you do so less often so it balances out

Well yes, but if you don't put money aside for repairs/maintenance then the four tyres take a fair wedge of that month's money.

So what you're all saying, is that my way is best?

You don't end up with a set of knackered tyres with loads of treat left on the back, but you also don't have to replace 4 at a time.

I'm glad you all recognise my genius.

Rotated the MiTo's wheels in 2012 and the GT's 2013, will most proberly need to replace the MiTo's this year and the GT's sometime after that. (you can often get a better deal on 4 new tyres than just two!)

I'll probably get around 18K miles off a set of tyres with 'spirited driving', and they'll all be fairly near the mark when I change them. This will be with swapping front-rear around every 6K miles.

Most of my Alfas have worn the inside of the fronts and the outside of the rears, so it works well!

NB I wouldn't really call that rotating, I understand rotating as meaning literally that...every tyre moves round one wheel at a time. That wouldn't have worked well with my Alfas.

Most places here mount new tyres on the rear now.

Need to rotate on AWD cars iirc.

There were instructions on what to do with tyres in the manual for Mrs. Bazza's Audi S4. But I can't remember what they said. I'll have a gander tonight if I think on.

I read somewhere it was safer NOT to rotate, damned if I can find the link though.

"Tyres should be changed round from time to time to ensure that the wear is equal on all tyres. If the front tyres are worn considerably more than the rear ones it is advisable to change them round."

However:

"The tyres with the deepest tread should always be used on the front wheels."

Thats the way I do the rotation on my cars as not to end up buying all 4 tyres at once

I rotate tyres religiously every 5000km (3k miles). I change my oil then, jack the car up and its a 10 min job. Alignment every 10k (6k miles) km.

So far I get about 90k km (55k miles) out of long life tyres or around 45k km (25k miles) out of soft sports tyres.

I don't understand times on this forum. I posted 4 days ago, does that make it Saturday? I thought it was the Friday.
Anyway they either rotated to work or as you quite rightly suggested, the shops
