Anniversary of the Suez Crisis

As there is a lot on this at the moment, what
do people think about this event from the
not so distant past?

Re: Anniversary of the Suez Crisis

Well, I suppose the answer is a bit of all three.

The Americans were instrumental in neutering the actions of "last gasp" colonial powers (Great Britain and France) who were intent on topling Abdel Nasser's Egyptian govt. Ironic now given what the Americans are doing out there at the moment.

I have a tenuous link with the expedition in that I sail with a bloke who was one of the Canberra Bomber pilots which bombed Cairo. Yes, we actually did bomb Cairo!

And yes we have now become subserviant to the US (At least the British have at any rate). "Yoh, Blair....!!"

I must confess, I don't really know that much about it. Didn't the Brits and France invade Eygpt and the USA told us to stop or something?

Egypt took back "their" canal.

France, UK and Israel invaded.

US muscled in, running interefence missions
and got the UN to force France/UK/Israel to pull out.

Used IMF to put pressure on UK too,
not for the last time either.

Yes.. didn't grumble when the Brits had to bail them out of Korea, though did they?

Or the Gulf..

Or Iraq..

Or Afhghanistan...

Or the Gulf again.

They didn't want to know in Kosovo or when there was that spot of trouble in the Sarf Atlantic in '82.

What's the point of that "special friendship" anyone?

To be fair the USA did provide us with losts of fuel and sidewinder missles. I believe they also sent up lots of intelligence from spy satellites etc

True, there are three reasons why we didn't
take a much bigger pounding during that
Thatcher election campaign:

1) US supplied the latest (helium cooled ?)
sidewinders that were way more acurate
and allowed the subsonic Harriers to provide
adequate aircover.

2) UK managed sting operations to keep
the Argentines busy trying to buy
more air-launched Exocets from a source
that never intended to supply any.
Edit: Helped by the US

3) The Argentines surrendered before they'd
perfected launching their stock of sea-launched
Exocets from the back of a land based truck.
