New or Used Alfa?

Depreciation is the killer cost with most new cars.

So, assume you have the wherewithall to buy a new Alfa -no silly lottery dreams- but while you can afford the typical 15k-30k ticket price for your new Alfa of choice, you have to take the hit for depreciation over its ownership.

Would you still buy new or always used? Explain your reasoning please.

Re: New or Used Alfa?

I bought both my Alfa's new.

Basically because you can the exact specification you want (for the 156 I wanted Alfa Red with Red leather - which was a bit unusual and I certainly never saw any pre-registered or nearly new ones with this combination).

Having said that, as I can't currently get a 159 in tis combination, I would consider buying a nearly new/pre-reg one if it saved me loads of dosh

Re: New or Used Alfa?

I voted "new", but not for the given reason.

The AR dealer was the only one who'd give
me a good price on my old 147!

New - because I have a phobia about what other people have done to/in a used car!

Re: New or Used Alfa?

Hmmm, both for me. The Gt was bought new but the GTV second hand, both were exact spec I was looking for though.

The GTV is the "fun" mobile and, if reliable and snag free, will turn out to be the most cost efficient if measured over a three year life span. trouble is it's not all that practical from a space point of view so the Gt is the better all-rounder. It's much better built, too.

Re: New or Used Alfa?

sorry but theres no way i'd buy a new one, an ex demo maybe, but i'm not gonna suffer such a loss on a new Alfa-it just doesn't make sense! i know most of us buy the things using our heart, but at some stage the heart has to take a beating by the head!

That's a good reason. Often overlooked is the "cost of change" taking p/x or selling your old 'un.

New, Used or Neither. Even Pasi doesn't need "other" for such a simple question! Go on, for a change! Dare ya!

The post-script comments were just a couple of obvious ones not prescriptive! Hence the request to explain reasons.

Re: New or Used Alfa?

I'll stick to my other, thank you very much

I have only owned used cars because I haven't afforded a new one ... BUT that doesn't mean I'd buy a new one just because it's new etc etc etc....

for example, one day I wish to own a GT ... that day will come, but I bet you can't get a new GT anymore, then again, I will also buy a 159 some day, and that will be a new car ...... get my point? no? no worries... not many do

Re: New or Used Alfa?

I bought my 166 for 8 grand when it was 2.5 years old. To buy it new would have cost me £31,000........I dont thinks so!

Re: New or Used Alfa?

I buy new...
It's taken a good few years to progress to this stage, but generally I change every two years now.
It was hard at the start to make the leap from buying secondhand to brand new. But well worth it imo
Changing every two years now means I have to shell out less money...

I'm not one to go for all the extras etc, just need a nice engine under the hood....
I made the change to Diesel (the dark side) after taking a 156 JTDm for a test drive, well worth it I might say, 52MPG at the Mo says it all...And plenty of power...the 159 is sweet...

My next move ( hopefully) will be to a 2.4 JTDm in 2008..

I'd have a 3.2 in a heart beat, but as I do about 600 miles a week it would not be practical...I'd need a tanker coming behind to keep her filled

Next on the wish list is a 70's Spider...just for the weekend

Re: New or Used Alfa?

I bought new, and will continue to buy new as I love the smell and experience of picking a brand new car up! Its also nice to know its history. I can't be damned with factory orders though as they often turn up to a different spec after many months of waiting.
I bought a showroom model as I was not fussy on leather etc, but the JTD 16V, Lusso and 5dr spec were an absolute must and to this day I do not regret it.

BTW - I was the first private buyer in the UK of the JTD 16V 147.

If I could afford it I'd probably buy new, or newer at any rate.

Re: New or Used Alfa?

New. I want a full three-year warranty with an Alfa. I've just ordered a GT on a 3-year PCP plan, so at the end of it the cost of the car's somewhat irrelevant as I plan to swap it for a V6 Spider......one can dream.

Bought my current 147 second hand and in two years it cost me over £2000 in servicing and repairs. I'd rather spend that money on something new, frankly.

Re: New or Used Alfa?

I used to buy new, but leaving aside the depreciation I realised I was becoming the post factory test driver. The cars would leave me in better nick than tney were delivered. When I discovered Alfa Service Specialists who could actually fix delivery faults and set the cars up properly, I realised that for me buying new was an awful waste. Like gra 166, I saved 30 grand buying the 164 when it was 2.5. That's covered an awful lot of maintenance, and allows me to run more than one car - which is kind of fun. If something comes along though that I really must have, then I'll buy new again, and the only thing that fits that bill at the moment is the 8c (if I can afford it)

Re: New or Used Alfa?

Sorry guys and girls its time to throw myself to the wolves.

I voted used. Why, because since dropping the real Alfa V6 and T/S engines in favour of warmed over GM units i wouldn't even bother going to the showroom, the engines are what make an Alfa great!

Hence the amount of time and money i am putting into my 164 'Leaf, one of the last real Alfas along with the 145,146,155,GTV,GT,166 and early 156,147's. All the last of their breed for me.

Long live the six chrome pipe V6, best V6 ever to be built for a production road car.

The current toy box occupants

AR GTV V6 - restoring
AR 164 V6 - fully restored
TVR Chimaera 400

Used. Two £20k cars for £22K. Can't argue with that for VFM :-)
