Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

RAC - I've never been able to fault them, unlike Green Flag with whom I have had two bad experiences.

Most of the insurers recovery services are provided by Green Flag when you get it as part of your insurance cover.

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

Not been with AA since they did me out of over 200 when they were taken over by Centrica. When it came to renewal time my fee was paid for, as usual, by direct payment from my credit card and the item appeared on my statement (and paid). However, I received a call from the AA saying the payment had been 'kicked back' and asking for me to pay another way, so I paid using switch; I was assured my membership would not be affected. When it came to paying the member's dividend they said as my membership had lapsed during the takeover period I wasn't eligible. Remember I had now paid twice, but had a refund from my credit card co. in the meantime. The notification from the AA/Centrica was a 'photocopy of a photocopy' grade and I suspect I was not the only one to have membership 'lapse' this way. Imagine if they did it for 1 000 members, that's nearly a 1/4 million saved! British Gas is part of Centrica so I changed my supplier for gas, does anyone know of any other Centrica co.?
Been with RAC since and they've been very good apart from once when they had to use a third party co. to collect my 33 (seized gearbox due to synchromesh ring breaking up).

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

Been with the AA virtually since I could drive due to being a mechanical dunce.
Not had any problems with them, although I've only called them out 4 times in 20years. Sorry to hear of your problems armoore, maybe you were just unlucky.

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

Got Alfa's breakdown cover.

When that runs out I've got a Total card:
Everytime you fill up with fuel they give you
15 days breakdown cover.

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

Iv got First Call breakdown cover, its an offer with Chris Knott insurance, £50 which includes european cover which I have had to use, was very good, when the car went t1ts up at the nurburgring, they came, took the car to the local Alfa specialist, I went home with the people I was travelling with, then when the car was fixed I had all my travel expences (flight+hotel+train) paid to go and get it

I have used them in UK too, they dont have thier own trucks but instead they contact the agent I am nearest to and get them out

AA since I passed my test. So far only had to use them with my old Citroen AX when a wheel seized and it wouldn't move. Solidified brake dust, apparently. Someone should make glue out of it.

Thumbs Up Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

Got 'More than' as it was really cheap with my insurance policy, which, in turn, was the best for the money I could find anywhere to go with the car and to include my wife on the fully comp. cover

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

I have Britannia Rescue cover which at about 80 a year gives me total protection away from home in my 156. They use any local approved garage and have always been very nice to me. When the 156 Selespeed pump blew, they came to collect it from where it stopped, and I nominated Alfa in Northampton, they trailored it there with no fuss at all! Many breakdown firms will only take it to a local garage, not one you nominate.

Andy

PS A friend of my wifes drove from Leeds to see us in Peterborough and his car packed in, he works for Halifax which owns Green flag. The van never came, repeated phone calls eventually discovered that they had sent a van to his home address, not the one he'd given where he broke down. They took over 15 phone calls, and 3 hours to come out. Then said the car, a clio was knackered and they were changing shift within an hour, so the next guy would come get him and drive back to Leeds. The next guy came in a little van which couldn't tow! So had to go back and get one which could! Unbelieveable incompetence! Wouldn't touch them with someone elses!

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

I haven't bothered since the AA turned into an insurance company. I reckon it's as cheap to call a tow truck.

AA - it comes with the Alfa warranty

happily never been needed, although there could be an embarrassing call out in the pipeline now that the dealer has broken my fuel gauge

RAC, although I must confess they never seem to be able to fix any of my cars by the roadside anymore.

Hmm, let me see. The power steering went on my 33, my MG just broke down (they don't even keep points and condensers in their vans anymore) and my GTVs injector light came on (turned out it had a water leak). In all cases the cars had to be towed back home.

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

they do seem to prefer towing more nowadays...i wonder whether they have a strict time allocation to each breakdown and if they cant make it they simply tow...who knows

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

I have always used the AA.

The only problem I have had with them is convincing them to send a relay truck when I first call if I know the problem is not fixable.

The most memorable time that comes to mind is when a conrod was sticking out of the hole it had made in the side of my SAAB's engine block. Despite whatever I said they still had to send a patrol van to see if they could fix it before arranging a tow truck.

I did manage to persuade them to help me change a fuel pump (same car, earlier occasion) by the side of the road - just happened to have a spare with me. Trouble was my diagnosis was wrong and I ended up needing a tow - so I guess a note comes up on the screen when I call - "this man knows nothing about cars - dont believe him even if he says there is a conrod sticking out of his engine".

Paul.

Re: Do You Have Emergency Breakdown Cover?

I use Autoaid, as somebody has already said 32 for the year full roadside, recovery and home start service - any car driven by me or my wife..only downside is you pay for the services and claim back. Just about to test the water as my other car was towed back from the M5 on sunday and I paid 215 for recovery.....Will let you know how fast they respond with my cheque. Initial contact during breakdown was fine, breakdown truck with me within the hour.
