Whats the best era for cars

Id say late 80/early 90! All cars were all different i.e. built quailty was hit or miss, cars had there own style and class etc..now they just look bold and crap, quality is all much the same.

Plus: Alfa 164 clover, Cosworth etc.. BMW they were a rare sight on the road, now there everywere!

Re: Whats the best era for cars

i think most people would say the era when they purchased their first car...in my case a ford capri 1.6L!! in the beige..dont worry that is not my fav car....i reckon the middle eighties....XR3i, Pugs, square front Golf GTi, Capri 280 Brooklands...my beautiful series 2 RS Turbo and then my sierra cosworth...ah those were the day..

yep defiently the 80's

Re: Whats the best era for cars

For me there two distinct eras where car design took a glorious leap forward: The 1930s and the 1960s.

1930s gave us such beauts as: Cords, Deusenbergs, Bugattis, Alfa 6cs etc

Then came the 1960s and the era of the "supercar": Lambourghini Miura, Aston Martin DB series, Maserati, Iso griffo, Monteverdi and countless more.

Re: Whats the best era for cars

I'm thinking 80s. Audi Quattro, Lotus Carlton, Ferrari F40, BMW M5 and M3 Alfa 164, the list goes on.

They all looked different too as someone has pointed out.

Re: Whats the best era for cars

Well the 50s and 60s gave use lots of really interesting cars...the Yanks with their winged "devils" becoming more and more outrageous until they stoppped making them and started to make really boring Yank tanks!

The road going "genitalia" called the E type Jag

and many many more.

and those raving about Alfa Romeos of the late 80s and early 90s well in my not so very humble opinion the Alfa Romeos of this period were not the "Dogs B ollocks" but rather the "Dogs turds"

Re: Whats the best era for cars

I don't know - there's quite a few good looking cars now, eg Aston Martins, Alfa's, Morgans, TVR's Lotuses etc, with some crackers to come e.g Alfa 8C, new Lotus Espirt, that Morgan Coupe.

But as you didn't include a poll I don't have to worry about what to vote for!!!

Re: Whats the best era for cars

Now, probably, but I have a soft spot for 30s cars, especially Alfa - the difference being that very few could have owned one. Thinking about it, if you owned one of the "star" cars from any era you'd probably think that was the best. The golden age for cars was probably any time before the introduction of speed limits, heavy traffic, gatsos, environmental levies, and the rest. An 8c at 150mph down a metalled road must have been quite a blast.

Did anyone think growing up that cars would be vastly faster by now ? With all the bluebirds breaking records, and the jet cars, I'd have put speeds in F1 at somewhere in 4 figures, rather than staying fairly constant at Cosworth v8 sort of speeds. Same with Le Mans, which was starting to nudge past 250 30 or more years ago.

Yeah, but that's becasue they keep on changing the rules to make them slower. Imagine how fast a full fround effects 1.5 turbo with full racing slicks would be now.

Re: Whats the best era for cars

no polls, is that allowed?

anytime before the price of oil got so high and before the need to conform with emission ,safety requirement etc.

the price of progress I guess ....

God yes, 1500 horses in grenade mode, now imagine a 10 litre engine - pace the Viper - with the same mods, the Veyron would be just the base model !

30's for elegance and charm.
60's/70's for character, variety and involvement.
80's/90's for power and rally reps.
Now for build quality, usability, reliabilty and equipment.

And I'd pick a few from each in my fantasy garage.
