I've voted 'other' as it depends what you mean by 'rather'? If money were no object, then a car showroom, however, two of the 3 cars I've got were bought privately.

i meant if you would rather take a risk and buy at an auction or buy from a dealer so if it goes pear shaped, you can take it back for them to sort it....

I agree with Harleyriv and buy from a reputable Dealer in general as I don't really feal confident enougth to buy at an auction

It's not quite that simple though as an auction will be cheaper, so there's an element of risk taking versus cost involved. If all things were equal the dealer would be my prefered option, but if it saves me 10k I'd probably prefer to go to an auction. Life - its never easy

Showroom for me, because at least you know (roughly) how badly you're being fleeced.

Re: Car Showroom or Car Auction

My family and myself have bought cars from both. With a showroom you dont need cash, there is the chance of a warranty-agreed terms etc etc but usually reflected in the price. With an auction you need cash but generally have a vast range of all different types of cars in various conditions and a bargain can be had. However unlikely to have a warranty or road tax and a chance is taken for faults etc etc. But this can happen in a showroom tooo.

I'm okay with auctions. You take a punt. Save money vs. the risk of buying a clonker.

I hope I'm reasonably techie, so I could get caught out by a duff sensor etc. but I hope I'd spot a cut and shut, or a seized cylinder.

Re: Car Showroom or Car Auction

Showroom, it's not just about the car and the money, there's a buildup that takes weeks and involves hundreds of miles of test drives in all sorts of different cars..... before you buy the first one you looked at

Can't argue with the VFM from an auction though, so long as you know your stuff.

Re: Car Showroom or Car Auction

Have brought over 20 cars from auction, never brought a lemon yet. Most auctions (if your spending a few grand) give you an hour to check for major faults etc, even if your unlucky enough to drop on a bad one you can always put it back through a week later. you might take a hit of a few hundred pounds but the money you are saving is worth the small risk. The worst cars iv'e had have been from dealers. The way I look at it is a lot of people use a dealer/used car garage to offload ther p/x because they would have trouble selling it private because of problems etc, used car warranties are not worth the paper there wrote on unless your buying from a main dealer or major used car retailer, but then you are really paying through the nose. To be honest you can't beat buying private, you can test drive the car, talk to the owner, barter down the price and hopefully drive away with a bargain.

Re: Car Showroom or Car Auction

It depends upon where the best car/bargain is at the time of buying
