Forwards or backwards

How do you go into a parking space, forwards or backwards? And I mean a standard car park space, not on-street or diagonal.

I'm a reverser, because:
- it's easier to judge width by looking in your wing mirrors
- it's easier leave the space by driving forwards (you can more easily see whats coming)
- I find it easier to judge the length of the rear than the drop away bonnet at the front

Backwards for me; there are some places that Alfa comedy steering lock just doesn't let you get into forwards!

Backwards - its a lot easier to get out when somebody parks close to you

Please don't hold everybody else up......... whilst you carry out your reversing manouevre.

Statistically we (as a group) all arrive somewhere at similar times (based on the group) but we leave at different times............

We are usually late...... so quick parking is essential

So the next time you are performing a car park ballet in front of me

Please park quickly and leave slowly in your own time

Thank You

Definitely backwards for me - I always find it twice as difficult to drive in and can't understand why anyone would bother.

Well, with the Alfa steering lock I find it easier to park in reverse than forward, so that makes it quicker than doing a 15 point manouevre going in forwards!

Re: Forwards or backwards

In a car park I would normaly go in forward becasue its easier to access the boot. Also, it means that someone nicking your car would have to reverse out, which would take them longer.

Re: Forwards or backwards

For some unknown reason, as I discovered to my cost one time when I left a car parked "the wrong way around", men tend to reverse in.

i dont see how it would take them longer as they would be wanting to get away quickly so taking their time wouldnt be an option. And as it wouldnt be their car anyway, they wouldnt mind getting a scratch or 2 down the sides and on the front from moving mout of parking space.....

Ahh, but they would still have to complete two moves (reverse, then go forward) as opposed to one (driving stright out). All other things being equal, if you were going to nick a car you'd take the one that would take the least time to steal.

Re: Forwards or backwards

I drive in nose first, as the car park space I use has a wall on the left.

If I reversed in, I'd have to park further over to the right, in the bay (so I could open the door) and that'd make my car more vulnerable to being thumped/doored by the car in the bay next door.

Also, reversing into a bay with a wall on the left of the bay is more tricky to judge.

Re: Forwards or backwards

Backend first.
Found it easier with the 147's terrible
manoeuvrability and now've gotten into
the habbit.

Also there are some customer sites I visit
that sticker your car if you park frontend first
due to plant evacuation rules.

EDIT And I take 2 spaces at my work so
as not to get dented doors.

if they stealing an alfa, they probably going to need to do at least 4 moves as the turning circle is crap

Re: Forwards or backwards

In the 4x4 then normally forwards as if you try to reverse in, people behind just get confused and with the 4x4 you just drive over and then drop off the kerb

In the Alfa then hopefully reverse in as its easier, unless traffic is too busy and its forward in only.

It depends on the situation. I have no problem parking forwards or backwards. And keep in mind I drive a Blazer...

Exactly. When parking in a supermarket car park I always drive into the space forwards as it's easier to access the boot. At work I always reverse into the space as it allows me to get a quicker getaway.
