Hmmm Which Classic Should I Sell?

Ok - I posted this in this forum because I would trust the decision of Alfa heads more than others.

My problem is that I now have 7 classics and only room for 6 - so one has to go - but which one.

I love all my classics almost equally and know that whatever decision I make I will be always thinking did I do the right thing afterwards.
Just post what you think - try not to let the Alfa's cloud your judgement though.

So here is the list and the pics;

1975 Triumph TR6
1977 Peugeot 504
1978 Alfasud 1.3Ti series 1 (not for sale - i just bought it)
1980 Scirocco Storm Mk I (a restoration project)
1981 Alfasud Sprint 1.5 Veloce.
1983 Alfasud 1.3Ti series 3
1990 Golf Gti (8v)

Definately the golf.Although you must really like golfs before you would consider giving up one of the others to keep it.

That TR6 looks brilliant though.

Re: Which Classic Should I Sell?

I was going to vote Sirocco as it's a resto project and I don't really like them! But, I thought the Golf was an earlier model at first...it's not, so that's my choice now.

I'd sell the scirroco as this means you'll be able to spend your time polishing your other cars, rather then welding the scirroco!

Re: Which Classic Should I Sell?

I would be inclined to say the Golf...it is the newest and easiest to replace in the future

For those who say the Peugeot 504...well when Alfa Romeo can make a road car that can do 100 mph on a dirt road without crashing, then they wil have made a 504 beater

Re: Which Classic Should I Sell?

I'd let the Pug go on the grounds that it's the ugliest and least interesting. However, there's a great case for either of the VWs on condition (Scirocco) and not-quite-classic status of the Golf.

You can't possibly consider losing the TR6, one of the Sud's is off the menu and I'd guess you want to keep the Sprint too. You're on here and have a Sud fetish by the look of it , so I'm guessing you don't want to lose the other Sud either. It is now a much shorter list and, deep down, you know which you like rather than love - and I'll be mildly surprised if it isn't one of the VWs.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Re: Which Classic Should I Sell?

Hmmmm - that's a really difficult choice and I don't envy you AlfaGuy. What you really need is a friend with a barn or spare garage where you could store the one you don't have space for.

I suppose if push came to shove I would have to say the Golf for much the same reason as Stori, but it does look a tidy car.

Re: Which Classic Should I Sell?

Thanks all - keep the votes coming in. The thing with the Golf is that it may be my newest classic but its car car that can average 35mpg, go round corners like its on rails and if it gets wet now and again its not the end of the world.
Also as I may sell my new GT soon the Golf would double as an excellent everyday car as well.

The scirocco could be sold but in its present state would not fetch much just not worth selling it IMO. Anyway I need a car to restore and I could not be bothered doing up any other car.

The Pug - I dunno it just melts my heart every time I sit in it - and would not fetch much either if sold - Id sonner have it than 2,500 in the bank.

The TR6 can't be sold at all - that's just my baby.

The sprint is just too beautiful to sell.

Yep - hard as it is to swallow the series 3 Alfasud seems to be the one. Reasons: It will not be a full classic (for road tax purposes) in Ireland till 2013 (my series one will be a full classic in 2008)
The sud should fetch a decent price given its condition.
Owning two 1.3Ti's - even if different series does not seem to make sense.

Sounds like you've made choice that answers both your rational and emotional needs. See you don't really need to post a poll, you really are the only one who knows what is best for you. Good luck with the sale.

Does Ireland have a rolling free tax rule for classics? The UK's stops in 1972...credit to Ireland if they have!

The Peugeot, sorry but it just lacks that certain something.
TR6 is a stunner.

In Ireland a car can't be classed as a classic (for road tax purposes) until it reaches it 30th birthday. Then the car can be taxed as a classic for €42 per year. Until it reaches its 30th birthday its classed as just a normal car and has the same rate of road tax as a brand new car.

The insurance side of things is different - a car can be insured as a classic once its 20 years old. Certain cars however - such as my Mk II Golf Gti won't be insured at all by some insurance companies and if they insure it they won't accept it as a classic.

Point taken Toronto - but I am thinking one step ahead you see with this poll.
If my sud - which is on Ebay Uk does not sell for the price I want for it - then I will keep the sud and sell something else - I value all opinions for that reason.

This is better than playing chess.

Re: Which Classic Should I Sell?

The only sensible option, surely, is to sell the Triumph, the Peugeot and both VWs and buy three more Alfas.

I learnt the hard way that no matter how much space you have or how many lock ups you can find, you ALWAYS manage to run out of space, so I commend you on your difficult decision and will sympathise with you in those difficult moments to come when it seems like you made the wrong choice (and no matter what you do there will be moments like that!)

Yes, fortunately it is rolling, so the available cars are starting to get even more interesting....
