Wave Iconic Sports Cars of All Time?

You can have an "iconic" status car without it necessarily being great in any dynamic or outright performance stakes.

Thus, I have to include the Mustang pony cars and the old Vettes because you have to say they are iconic. Ditto, others in this list have a nod towards stardom of one sort or another through films etc (what kid didn't want to be 007 in the DB5?).

So vote on this basis or just because you like it. Lots didn't make the cut including various Ferraris, Masers, MX5, Frogeye, TR's....can't get them all in but feel free to chip in as usual!

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Jan 2019 New Giulia Veloce Misano Blue
2008-15 New 159Ti experience: overwhelmingly positive. Reliable and fun over nearly 100k.
2015-18 147 1.6TS runaround
6/9/12 - 15 New Mito 135MA Distinctive - 100% reliable 37k

If I had to pick a favourite car from your list it would be the Aston DB5. However, I would now look on that as being more a GT then a true sports car. Hence I voted for the Lambo

I voted E-Type

But a Healey 3000 would be near the top of my list

Voted Mustang, but would have to be 68 Shelby 550 GT in silver

Just like Eleanor.

But Jan would go for the Dino can we vote twice?

Brilliant sequence. I even had to download that Matt Munro song onto my iPod last time I saw it - even though I don't really like him (a bit old even for me!)

That's a fair point. I didn't think through the grand tourer versus sports car distinction to be honest. I just wrote down the first 14 or 15 all-time classics that popped into my head and cut it down to 10. Then the list grew again and I had an argument with myself about what to leave in/take out so I just went back to the first 10.

Always loved big Healeys myself. Trouble was, I couldn't honestly vote it as being iconic in a global sense, so it missed the cut. Sorry.

I suppose you can if I change the rules. I'll pop off and see if it'll let me. No vote rigging though. This isn't Florida.

I can't see how to get back in to the poll itself to change that rule. Do you know how to?

Re: Iconic Sports Cars of All Time?

I voted for the AC Cobra, although my favourite is the Dino. However, if we're talking iconic it has to be something that can be used as a metaphor for what a sports car should be, and the AC Cobrta ticks all the boxes, its a 2 seater roadster which accelerates like nothing on earth. I think its meant to pretty good around the twisty bits too

We're on the same wavelength again. It got my vote. Plus there are so many imitations (the sincerest form of flattery?). It's an old-fashioned, hairy-chested monster with a V8 too and sod all comfort. It had to be the one.

My sentiments too, the old mustang with a hunking great V8 burbling away. Just keep to straight roads

Re: Iconic Sports Cars of All Time?

E Type, though personally I wouldn't have one over a Muira or many Ferrari's.
But there is no denying their status as an icon, I mean 150 MPH in the early 60's and at a price that was almost affordable, not to mention the drop dead looks and the racing pedigree of the D Type.

But the 33 was only a sports prototype, you could include a Porsche 917 or a Ferrari 512 if you wanted to stretch to racing spin offs.

Got to be. Been around forever, layout all wrong, yet they make it work, real drivers car, fastest real world car you can realistically afford and use EVERY day.

Not the best looker, but a real ICON.

Please read my original covering post.

These things are meant to provoke a bit of debate. It's just a bit of fun at the end of the day -not serious for Heaven's sake!

I've lusted after all of these at one point or other (OK never an MGB- that's the joker ). If value wasn't the issue and it was for myself I don't think I could resist a Miura - but that is not what the poll is titled. Hence I'd lean to Cobra or Mustang but voted Cobra.

Maybe we should next run one on the coolest or sexiest of all time?
