Re: cruise control?

Was tempted to go for the 'stupid movie option' but resisted.

Never really saw the point to cruise control but with the amount of old bill and cameras on the road it can be very useful.

Re: cruise control?

Only ever use it in radar zones.
It's the only thing that reduces
that "Go faster!" urge!!

Re: cruise control?

Yip.

Useful for sticking the speed to 85mph, where I seem to get 55mpg...which is nice.

Re: cruise control?

Had it, hated it wouldn't have it again in this country. Don't like the feeling of not being in control (unless I'm ****€d).

Clarkson actually got more mpg when he took the A8 to Scotland and back when he switched it off!!

To Nev, are you still safe unless you exceed 160 KPH in France on the wonderful Autoroutes??

Re: cruise control?

Yep, really useful for avoiding slowly speeding up from slightly to highly illegal!

Re: cruise control?

i use it on long motorway journeys, very good for fuel economy, the range on the trip computer actually goes up for the first 30 min of the journey before slowly dropping, makes driving more relaxing but difficult to use in high traffic levels

i use it every night in my truck, no traffic at night, goes on as soon as i get on the M1 and doent get turned off till i get to avonmouth 3 hrs later

Re: cruise control?

I do over 20,000 kms (12500 miles) a year and use cruise control about 95% of the time these days. Takes the stress out of worrying about speed cameras

Hey Simon,

France has tightening up very much over the last two years.

More radars and more patrols.
Aside: Got burned off by 2 gendarmes in a WRX
yesterday, on the way back from Grenoble.
Gave me the shock of my life when I realised
that the Subaru coming up behind me (I was at 150)
was actually a cop car!!!!
They were more interested in roadtesting their
new toy, luckily.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/funonw...u_police.reut/

Basically if you get caught +20kph over the limit there
are severe penaties now. Also France & the UK are
starting to share ticketing info between them. (B'stard!)

As a resident if you get busted +20kph you're likely
to get sent to the Tribune. In which case they'll
force you to switch your UK licence for a French one
and they give you the points (Or ban you, depending
on the seriousness.)

Also if you get caught by the cops in France who are
using a speed gun (Actually binoculars) they will always
take off 8kph due to "equipment limitations".
So on the autoroutes 140kph is concidered "safe".
i.e. you probably won't get pulled. I've been pulled
at 160 and fined 90 euros. (Escorted to the ATM by
2 bike cops.)

But it's your licences/money, so......
Be careful out there!

Re: cruise control?

only ever use it through road works with speed cameras....to many cars pulling out close in front and then not speeding up on British motorways

Re: cruise control?

The GTA is my first car with cruise control and I did experiment with it initially, but as I dont do long motorway journeys or run un-familiar radar gauntlets I never actually use it.

And anyway, it doesn't operate beyond 190kph

Re: cruise control?

I have it as standard on my daily driver (Mazda 6 Estate...sorry, totally dull but car allowance is almost as restricted as our company car choice which is worse ). I never would have believed I'd admit it but it's a Godsend on the regular long motorway runs I have to make up to Scotland.

Re: cruise control?

Nope, had it on one car, and I didn't like the sensation of accelerating while doing nothing. IMO it is a bad thing.

Re: cruise control?

Nev,
got done badly in France a couple of years ago... was scared of missing the ferry and I put the foot down... bad idea... if you are not a resident, the rule is that you have to pay immediately to be released... so make sure you have cash and a couple of working credit cars... I needed all that to leave 750 Eur behind! The pigs (nothing against the french btw, just money-grabbing-speed-cops in general...) were quite organised too... they had a little map on how to get to the closest cashpoint...
Also, if you are driving to the UK, beware there are always cops with radar in the last 50-100km before the eurotunnel... (around St Omer, before highway toll, as that's where they stop you).

back to main topic: i often (2 a year) drive uk to italy and for long journeys, the cc is a must!

anything that moves using more than 4 legs, flies and is not a bird and/or is too small to be turned into a burger, should be vacuumed.

Ummm. I hope you mean 750FF not euros!

What kind of speed where you clocked at!?

And did you get a reciept?
Christmas used to mean getting stopped,
paying, but not actually getting a ticket

Don't know ANYONE in 10 years who's had
to pay that much. (Even drunk drivers! )

Re: cruise control?

emh... Euros!
I was really quite fast... Let's say the 147 didn't have much more to give... not really complaining... my fault entirely and a stupid speed (with my rational hat on - with my alfa hat on, I wish the whole of EU adopted the autobahn concept...) I was quite annoyed at myself that I had driven nearly 1000km following the limits, and all of a sudden I accelerate and get done after 5 minutes...
... I did get a receipt (and was fully sober - don't do d-d)
It worked I guess... now, when I cross France, which I am doing again this Easter break... 130 on the cruise control... 140 when I feel adventurous... so see? cruise control is good! :-)

Re: cruise control?

Yes cruise contol is the only thing that stops me speeding
on an autoroute.

I got busted near Calais taking my last UK car back
about 10 years ago. (Citroen ZX Volcane 1.9i
No cruise control! )
I'd actually used the Nice->Paris Motorail. Good night's
kip, blast up the autoroute and just outside Calais:
<<FLASH>> "That'll be 600FF please."

Re: cruise control?

Hei Nev, I have just realised you have a v. nice motor... how's the ride? and the 2.2 engine?

... all ready for the journey (London-Italy)... leaving tomorrow nite, the biggest challenge trying to leave London... crossing France from Calais to Frejus... kinda boring for a while... French highways are too good and make it too easy... it all becomes + entertaining when you hit the Alps...

If I don't get internet for a few days, all have a Happy Easter !

Car is running really well.!

If you fancy a nicer run than Autoroutes (i.e. no cruise control!)
Try slipping over to Grenoble and shooting down the Route Napoleon
Details: http://www.route-napoleon.com/map/index.html
You can pick up the A8 south of Grasse.

Brera loves this road.
