Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I always like lots of gauges in 'sporty' cars, and the one thing I find disapointing with newer Alfa's is that they don't have an oil pressure gauge. Do you think they should bring them back?

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I think oil pressure gauges are a good way to gauge the performance of the car as well as making it more engauging....

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

Id say its a very important part of the engine reporting - but I guess nowerdays its been replaced completely by a bulb in the dash

Was the 155 last to have one?

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I guess I'm old-fasioned but yes.... I was disapointed to find that my new Alfa did not have oil pressure indication in addition to temperature.

Back in the good old days of sporty driving before the gatso brigade took over, it was standard practice to monitor your revs, oil pressure/temp, and water temp. Oh... and fuel qty

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I assume they've become less common due to the need to get other things behind the dash board and there might be a lack of space???

However, as I beleive that modern cars are now having a lcd display in addition to other instrumentation I don't see why more of the engines performance can't be incorporated into that.

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I am glad to see the 159 and Brera have oil level gauges. This is important considering Alfa's usual thirst for oil, and the fact some owners don't bother to check it...

Do they?

I know the petrol versions have oil temperature gauges, but I haven't seen an oil level indicator yet.

My 33 has an oil level indicator (i.e., a warning light that comes on if the oil level is low - not the same as the oil pressure light). Personally though, I always think a gauge is better than a bulb as it gives you advance warning of what is happening. I have an oil pressure and an oil temperature gauge fitted to my MG (and my 33 for that matter), and combined they can give you an indication of if the oil level is reducing.

If they do have oil level gauges, it's a bit ironic since the new generation of engines are unlikely to be oil thirsty, they're GM blocks (with Alfa heads)!

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

My 155 used to have an oil pressure gauge. You could see the pressure burst into life at start up (4.5 bar), settle at 4 bar, sink a little to 3.5 bar when the engine got hot and then go up and down when you planted the accelerator . Good fun, but also a good indication as to the health of the engine and what it was doing. She also had an oil level indicator (I wonder how many blown-up 156's would have been prevented with one of those? ).

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

There is little reason that Alfa could not have put an oil pressure, oil temp and/or oil level gauge into their cars - it could have been incorporated into a trip computer display as many other manufacturers have been doing for years.

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I am sure I saw a picture of the 159 dash in autocar or what car, and on the display it said oil level. It was like a digital bar graph.

on the LCD display on my 147GTA you can select oil temperature display, but I too would like to see an oil pressure gauge of some sort.

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I saw the pic of the oil level gauge as well.

When my old 156 engine expired. I moaned about there be no oil gauges, and was told that there was an oil pressure light. However unofficially I was also told by the time Oil Pressure light comes on it far too late anyway

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

I'm surprised that there is not an aftermarket customisable LCD display that could be used along with sender units to show a range of engine information - maybe there is but I've never seen one

Yes exactly, I believe the oil warning light comes on a 5lbs/ft, which basically means you need to rebuild your engine. Oil pressure gauges are complicated to use, and you have to really know what's 'normal' for your car before you can interpret them very well. But once you're used to them they're much more informative.

That must have been a JTD

The diesels are known for their lack of oil consumption that is why Alfa started to fit oil level indicators on the 147 JTDs.

Don't know. The 164 has one, whether or not production stopped before or after the 155, I don't know.

Must say, I'm surprised to learn that the newer alfas don't have them. Seems their 'sporting heart' is being left by the wayside more and more.

Exactly, I was very disapointed that my GTV didn't have one.

The petrols have the oil-level gauge too.
And the dipstick appears to be made from....

steel cable!

The good news is, judging from the photo I saw in Autocar, the Brera does have one!

Re: Should Alfas have oil pressure gauges?

All cars should have em

I've had an oil pump fail on me before (fiat) and can't help thinking I'd have known there was a problem with it before the engine went bang instead of wondering what the funny noise was
