Re: Who makes the best cars?

Might shock you, bu i voted American. Let me explain why. In America, American cars are inexpensive to buy. They come with an extensive warranty programme, and virtually no service costs for the first many years. The Customer Service is superb, and you can get a good deal with insurance and petrol companies when you buy a new car, even if you are only 20 years old. You can custom fit your car at almost no extra costs, and the variety of models in endless. There is truly a car out there for your exact purpose. Your exact taste maybe not, but purpose and wallet yes. Ok they cant turn a corner, but you dont need that in the States. And ok, the build quality is not up to par compared ot the best of the European car makers. But overall the car package in the states is light years ahead of anything in the rest of the world, and because of this they make the best cars in the world. Problem is they are rubbish anywhere else but in the States, because they end up being expensive on all counts, and without decent warranty and customer service.

For Americans, indeed they are, because salaries there are usually comparatively higher than in Europe while car prices are somewhat similar.

Well, that depends on the state. My experience is with California and insurance companies there have a state license to steal. I live in Naples, which has the most expensive insurance policies in Italy, and possibly the worst driving style and stats in Europe, and insurance prices are on par with those in California.

Yes and no, you have to note the (big) GM exception. Many of their cars are simply re-badged between their Lincoln/Mercury/... brands, and that's one of the reasons GM has become unpopular, because that doing has become really obvious.

Sorry but here I have to plainly disagree.

In the States Ford and GM have to "sell by rebates" because of the perception of poor quality and poor price competitiveness of their cars, comparatively with the Japanese and Corean cars. Right now, Hyundai, Toyota , Honda, Nissan, Mazda have the best reliability, which gives them the best resale value. Given the number of miles people drive to and from work in the US, both are really important.

And then if you look at the "prestige" cars, right now Lexus is making the German brands sweat somewhat, yet those are still dominating the Japs in terms of market shares in that section. And then after those you'll find American cars. Same story, too much standardization, not enough quality.

Re: Who makes the best cars?

I voted the Pacific countries. Since the mid to late eighties, Hondas have been made using the old Mercedes quality standards, and it's their reliability that allowed them to penetrate the European and US markets, even as their dealer networks were still being set up. Ditto for Toyota.

It makes sense: when you're trying to penetrate a new market, it's smarter to sell a car with brake pads that last 60k miles instead of 30k miles, even if they come directly from Asia. They might be originally somewhat more expensive to produce and ship, but your supporting parts stock and shipping costs are divided by two. And once the perception of good quality becomes public, the resale value of the cars shoot up, and you sell more.

And then, other brands have to follow up, and it's good for us! Go Pacific!

Re: Who makes the best cars?

I chose Pacific.....toss up between them and the Germans. I had one German car (VW Jetta) which was great, excellent build quality and very reliable.
I had one terrible Jap car (Honda) , but three fantastically reliable and cheap (price and maintenance) Japs. two Nissan SR20's (Sentra/Sunny) and a Toyota Corolla (Twin-cam 1600 jobbie).
That SR20 Nissan motor (designed by Lotus btw, built under license by Nissan) was incredible. You could punish it all day long every day for twenty years, and it will keep going, and keep going faster as well. Just don't run it without coolant, those ALU heads buckle quite easily.
The only thing wrong with the Nissan SR20 was the badge.

I had promised myself I wasn't going near this debate with a ten foot pole, however, I can't help myself.

General Motors doesn't sell rebadged Lincoln and Mercury models. Lincoln and Mercury are Ford divisions.

Same thing! Goes to show Ford, GM and their brands have a perception problem in the US.

Trust me it's not a problem here. Even the average monkey on the street can tell you that Chevy is a GM brand and a Lincoln isn't.

As for you, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you've been into too much Italian table wine.

Nah let's just say that around the Silicon Valley, German and Japanese brands are all the rage, unless you buy an SUV, but I've never been of that crowd. Say hi for me to the snow monkeys while I sip on my wine.

Re: Who makes the best cars?

TVR in Blackpool.
For me the only countries that make cars with soul are Italy and England.

We also build good cars in Nissan and Honda factories, as well as the german/american BMW Mini.

Not sure about MG Rover though I have had lots of trouble with them, but thats due to the design not the workers who make them. They are gone now anyway.

Uhm....Nobles are made in South Africa, and most of the Lotus 7 type cars (in fact all of them except Caterham) like Birkin, are also made here. Ford has just given the same guys that make the noble permission to make replica GT40's and they are actually allowed to call them GT40. (even Ford themselves could not call the new GT a GT40)

Re: Who makes the best cars?

I believe the Japanese prized the UK built Nissans so much they started badging Primeras with Union Jacks for export out there.

Then we have the hand-built specialised end serving both quality and performance niches - irrespective of the origins of the current ownership.

Re: Who makes the best cars?

My two favourite cars were a German built Ford Sierra and an Italian Fiat Tipo!

The Sierra died at huge speed when the timing chain snapped and bits of engine fell out and the Tipo lived a full year withour me opening the bonnet as the cable broke just after I bought it and I ran it for a year adding only fuel. Fantastic! I got back more than I paid for it on Part Ex!

Re: Who makes the best cars?

Well I don't know if they are the 'best'... best being a rather subjective term... but I think we Aussies make a bloody good car, for our environment anyway.

Thats one of the problems down here with the European cars, unless you live in a major city they really don't like the environment.
