Well Happy Do you like cars with sunroofs?

Hi everyone, would you prefer a car with a sunroof or not? Are they great for added ventilation, letting the sun in, looking at the stars and sky, or are they a nusance, reducing headroom, increasing glare form the sun through the roof, causing leaks, or maybe causing corrosion around the edges as a car gets older..

Let me know your views... This poll is irrespective of whether air con is fitted or not by the way.
Simon.

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

I think the average metal or glass sunroof is a waste of time. They are just too small to make any real difference to driving enjoyment and yes they create all sorts of problems as the car gets older.

Many luxury cars these days don't fit a sunroof as standard which gives the game away.

Glass sunroofs can be particularly bad for causing condensation in frosty weather and wetting your front seats.

If I really had to have a sunroof on a car this type would be my choice. I once had a Renault Twingo with a sunroof like this and it was a joy to drive on a sunny day.

Really great on a hot 30-40 C day...good for getting sunburnt .

Too be honest, a Sunroof is ok in the UK. In most parts of Australia they are rather useless.

never liked them much, wind noise, leaks but on the plus side they do give more light to the interior.

Not a fan of them personally - I mean, they make a complete mess of your hair

Although I do love the old rag-tops you get on some classics (Vitesse comes to mind)

Odd.... I like to have a sunroof but I never actually use mine

In the documents for my Landcruiser the sunroof is called a 'moon roof' - and in this country you are more likely to use it at night than during the day

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

I think they're great! You can get some air in the car without opening the window.. a bit of light on an overcast day or open it completely when it's monsterly hot (no a/c on my 155). I would always have one.

Not liking them because they leak or sometimes give trouble (nothing a new Webasto relay can't solve @ 40 from your Alfa dealer ) is no good reason... it's like saying you don't like your engine as it "sometimes give trouble" (those of you with T/Sparks, that is.. )

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

My 156 has a sunroof, and I really don't like it.

It reduces the already limited headroom, it's redundant for any car with air-con, and it's another potential point for water leakage......

I can't see the point of it.

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

Sunroofs are great. Had one on almost
every car I've owned.

What's all this talk about leaky ones!?!

No sunroof seals keep out water.
The water is meant to collect around
the inside edge and then drain out
through the drain tubes.

If you've got a got water coming in from the 'roof
it just means you need to unblock the tubes.

It's funny how instead of people doing this,
you see old cars with their perfectly good
sunroof duct-taped up!

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

Had one on my first 2 cars, none since. If I never had one again I don't think I would be too bothered.
Not really a country for sunroof usage weatherwise, but on the flip side, we get plenty of rain so plenty of leaks.

p.s. sunroofs are just another source of rattles, problems 99% of the time

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

My car came complete with a factory sun roof.
I've tried driving with it opened up in progressive increments, and also in tilt mode. Its quite nice in low speed stooge mode but I honestly didn't choose to buy a 147 GTA in order to drive slowly, and when you drive it as it likes to be driven an open sunroof is a noisy/blustery distraction from the engine noise and the driving experience

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

Wouldn't be without one.
Sunroof = emergency exit.

Try climbing out through an air-con unit in an accident.

Also a good way to rid yourself of tail-gaters: Simply open sunroof and wave a housebrick at them; they soon back off.

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

BMW do the best sunroof's - steel - none of this silly glass stuff - and they have a nice large opening.

I had a nice sunroof on my BMW 318iS and loved it - but again could only use it on the odd occasion. I would have much preferred to have A/C but it was not in the car when I bought it new off the forecourt.

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

I wouldn't be without one. If it's not raining, my roof is open unless it gets below 1 or 2 centigrade. As I start my car and put it into gear my other hand is opening the roof. In climates like SA and Aussie you do need a VERY good aircon as well. I've never been into convertibles. They weaken the car, ruin the looks and you normally fry in the heat and get blown away by the wind.

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

I really like sunroofs. I missed them when I got my 145 which had aircon instead. When I was trying out RX-7s I really wanted one without as the purist in me worried about body stiffness. I ended up with a sunroof in addition to aircon, it makes the cabin so much lighter, improves ventilation, and although it can be blustery I find it invigorating having it fully open on the motorway; it makes me feel much more in contact with the driving experience I think the reason they stopped putting them in luxury cars was that 1) everyone demands air con, so you can argue sunroofs are unneccesary, and 2) I bet the cost of aircon has come down to be comparable, if not cheaper than a decent sunroof.

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

Here is my view, now a few have posted.. I absolutley hate them, every car i have owned with a sunroof had caused me trouble. Most of the cars I have had with them have been older though. They either leak, have corrosion around the edges, the motors pack up, and if you have a glass one the condensation drips off onto your head. As well as the sun shining through into your eyes. On top of that I am 6ft1" and need all the headroom I can get.. My grandad seals his up with mastic.
I do like convertibles though except in the winter when most of them leak..

Try be obective about the sunroof. If it was in good condition, would you enjoy the openess and fresh air feel, or do you prefer driving with windows closed? Try forget about the faults they bring with age. Being a shorty, I don't have a headroom problem (although I have problems with my head, but that's another thread) But don't sunroofs give you more headroom, not less? One thing that scares me about droptops, is they are so vulnerable to vandals with knives. I've seen the damage done as a friend made a lot of money repairing them.

Re: Do you like cars with sunroofs?

I can't say I ever use the sunroof if I have one to be honest, if I want fresh air I usually open a window. Also the sun cannot shine down in my face then.

I love sunroofs, but I agree that they give you less headroom. Even the simple flip up types have a rim which protrudes into the car, while most metal ones have additional roof lining thickness to allow the roof to slide between the roof panel and the headlining

Well I'm not voting then because it makes a massive difference to me. Without air con a sunroof is essential, with air con it's a waste of time.
