How often do you change your car?

On average how often do you replace your car?

And what is the longest you have ever kept one car?

Do you tend to keep your cars, or do you go through them on a regular basis?

I kept my first car (which was a 2nd hand Fiesta) for 8 years. It was still going pretty well when I sold it, but my annual mileage was getting to high and maintenance was costing more than the car was worth.

Since then, I have had two cars - one for 3 years and then one for 4 years. I have had the 156 for about 18 months now, but I am thinking of getting a new 156 and keeping it until it falls apart .

Re: How often do you change your car?

Funny as I was thinking about the number of cars I have had, and think I need to stick with the 156 for a while. I passed my test in Jan 1997 and the 156 is car number 8 for me

None have ever broke, I just seem to have got bored and changed quite a bit.

I bought a 1984 Panda when I was 16, and then my dad wanted one as a runabout/van and found a 1986 MK2 Panda so we swapped. I then bought an Uno and that was a heap so didn't stay long. 1998 saw my first alfa arrive, the 1987 33ti I still have and am trying to get on the road again. Then in Feb 2000 I got the 1991 75TS. Phew, then late 2001 saw me at my silliest when I bought a 1990 delta integrale from the Netherlands and imported it back here, I kept that one 2 years and would still own it if the maintenance/economy wasn't so crippling. I traded that for a brand new Punto in Nov 2003, that was a mistake in terms of depreciation as I only kept it until Sept 2005 but my sister bought it for half what I paid so she is happy.

Then came the 156 GTA last June, actually bought on my birthday. The car was 18 months old and with the multispoke alloys, Xenons, winter pack i think (heated seats) I think I got a bargain.

Hopefully I won't get bored with this one

Re: How often do you change your car?

For Tax purposes I have to have an HP on a car, but I do get bored after about two years (I've had the 147 for two years now incidentally).
My classic/old cars I tend to keep longer. currently the Sud is the longest I've owned ANY car, going on 5 years.
My first sud lasted me 5 years as well, but I loved that car so much I would still have owned it if I did not bury it into the back of a truck in 1993

Re: How often do you change your car?

2 - 3 years from new although previous Alfas dissolved very quickly so they were only 18 months

Longest was a Vauxhall, 4 years of mediocre motoring, but I had to leave it parked in "dodgy" places........... no one would nick it

Isn't that interesting

Re: How often do you change your car?

Got my license in 1999, bought a VW Golf Convertible for summer, which was subsequently nicked in September (ah well, the weather was turning autumny anyway)...
Then I bought a new black facelift VW Polo GTI, which was actually quite a nice little machine, of which I took delivery in the beginning of 2000. Drove that car for 2,5 years (55,000kms) until I sold it because I got my Alfie , which was my first company car.

My Alfie was a 2002 5-door 147 1.6 TS in fire black with 17" Selespeed jobbies with tyres on them (rubbish ones at times).

Then in aug-2005, I took delivery of my current car, an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0FSI Ambition Pro Line (which is quite a mouthful compared to "alfie")

So, the longest I've had any car yet was 3 years, and that was the Alfa.

Re: How often do you change your car?

5 BMWs, 2 Impreza Sti's, 2 Alfas, 1 PT Cruiser, and 1 Toyota Wish over the past 10 years - average is 1-2 years per car. But for the first time in my life, my current ride, the 147 GTA, has me not thinking the grass is greener on the other side. I've only had her a little over a year, but lover her more now than when I first got her! I think she will easily break the record!

PS one of the other cars we loved deeply was our 2000 2.5 liter 156 SW - the only reason we sold it was the arrival of our third kid (thus the hideous 7 seater Toyota Wish...).

Re: How often do you change your car?

I always buy a new car with the intention of keeping it a decade but never do. I may do though with the GT (might even keep it for good) as I use my Caddy van for everyday use so the GT could last a long time in my ownership.

I seem to be doing a lot of chopping and changing on the classic car front though but am gradually assembling my all time favourites that are in mint condition so the wheeling and dealing may stop here too before long as I nearly have everything I want.

Main car = GT - have.

Everday runabout = Caddy van - only 30,000 miles so it will do another 200,000 no problem.

My classics;

Alfasud 1.3Ti have and will never sell
Alfasud sprint - have - never for sale either
TR6 - have not for sale at any price ever.
Golf GTi Mk II - have not for sale either.
Ford Escort Mk II RS2000 - want and am looking.

Current cars for sale;
1975 Daimler 4.2
1977 Peugeot 504
1980 Mk II Escort 1.3L.

Re: How often do you change your car?

I have owned 20 cars in 9 years of driving. I owned 7 different cars last year alone. The longest I kept a car was my TVR Griffith 500, which was 20 months. I am not a dealer I just like to change cars a bit.

You have made me fell so much better! People think I am mad, as I have been driving 9 years and the 156 is my 8th car. Add to that I actually had my 2nd car before I had actually passed my test LOL.

I think I just get a bit bored, the longest I have kept a car is 2 years which was the Lancia integrale and I only intended to keep that 6 months.

I hope to keep the 156 for a while though.

Re: How often do you change your car?

Wow, I hadn't realized I've been averaging 2.5 years for each car over the last 10 years... Only my very first car died on me (after 22 years of good service!), for the rest I had to sell cars before moving to another country.

But then there's been a nice progression in terms of ride quality, boy am I glad to live in Italy now! :-)

1994: Renault 12
1997: Opel Kadett
1998: Honda Accord
1999: Honda Civic
2004: Alfa 155

Re: How often do you change your car?

I've had about 38 cars in my 22yrs of driving, some I've had for a few weeks some for many years, but many overlap each other!
For eg, I have my GTA, but as well as that I have an old BMW e23 735 B10 Alpina that I am gradually renovating. My wifes car and another I have just bought to try and sell on after we move (it's an estate!)
The longest time I've owned one was my M3 (5 yrs) the shortest was an old SD1 Rover Vitesse (about 2 weeks).
I had a list somewhere but I cannot find it.

Alfa 147GTA
Ford Sierra 4x4 estate (Mk1 excellent car) bought it of a guy who used it to go around his farm, magic car really
Ford Sierra 4x4 estate (Mk2 crap car) was offered this one from a job I did, he delivered it, so I sold it on.
Ford Sierra 4x4 estate (Mk1 ex rally support car, fair, good road holding) wanted another?
Peugeot 106 Rallye, another excellent car, revved like nothing else.
BMW 318i Touring.

Is there a pattern emerging???

Well, I would like to swap more often, but as its an Alfa and looses £100 every time you sit in the drivers seat , I tend to keep them for a while.
