Crazed Will you follow the winter olympics?

The winter olympics are just around the corner, so what does this mean to you?

For me it is the alpine, cross country skiing, ski jumping and ice hockey, and with regard to those sports I believe this is the pinnacle and I will spend as much time as available following these sports.

For the rest I am not too bothered.

Curling is, however, invention of the devil and should be annihilated.

Re: Will you follow the winter olympics?

I actually prefer the winter games to the summer games (apart from the women's beach volleyball, of course ).

I will be following:

- the bobsleigh/luge/skeleton/mad-******* events
- the biathelon (basically shooting/x-country skiing)
- the alpine skiing events
- the ice hockey (but only for the fights)
- the speed-skating

My other half will, of course, be watching the figure skating and she is a great fan of the curling, but I still haven't figured out why...?

Re: Will you follow the winter olympics?

For the final time, it's not "ICE" Hockey it's just good old fashioned, plain, generic, unmodified "HOCKEY."

The only time "hockey" needs a modifier is when you are referring to "FIELD" Hockey, and let's face it, that's not really hockey. Heck it's not even a sport. It's nothing more than a school sanctioned bloodlust for crazed females who enjoy wielding heavy, blunt pieces of oak against each other in the most underhanded, sneaky, vicious way possible, with the intent to smash bones and render their opposition (and sometimes their own teammates) unable to ever walk again.

I had not realised this came up before.

Of course, coming from a hockey power nation, like yourself, I also do not see the need for a modifier, however, with this forum being populated to a significant extent by UK and Irish residents, I made the concession.

Will you be watching then? Hope we meet in the finals.

P.S. Field hockey I have to agree with, my wife even made her school team in this, and she has no interest in sport whatsover.

Re: Will you follow the winter olympics?

Why haven't you mentioned snowboarding? It's snowboarding and curling for me. I've no doubt I'll be watching the bobsleigh and the luge, but not in a supportive capacity, more in a "****** me that's quick" general have it on in the background capacity.

There are only 10 options for poll questions, but for snowboarding, tick alpine. For biathlon tick cross country. For sledding disciplines tick other.

Aha, I wondered where the silent curling watching majority was hiding. There has to be one, otherwise what would be the reason for curling to take up so much airtime I well remember back in '98 when I was in the UK, the BBC devoted nearly all its air time to curling and us knocking out Canada in the semis got a miserable 10 minutes. That's like England winning back the Ashes getting a 30 second mention on the news.

BTW the poll allows multiple answers, so no need to restrict yourself just to one.

Of course, if your real name is Hermann Maier, then you will have nothing to learn from watching...

And of course, ski-jumping is a great weekend past-time.

Seriously though. I get 20 to 30 skiing days per year, but will make a lot of effort to see the Olympic downhill. This race is special.

A man after my own heart, except the sledding events. Never saw the attraction really. And hockey - watch it for the game, there are not many fights at this level anyway. Fastest collective game on the planet.

Similar attraction to time-trial motor racing - seeing someone taking their life in their hands, with only their skill and a dose of luck keeping them from a gory death......

Of course you will be supporting Finland. I will be supporting Czech Republic. We are in the same qualifying group. With Canada, Germany and someone else, Italy maybe. That's all I meant to say. Sorry if it was not clear.

Hope we meet again in the semis

First let me say that I fully respect the skill and fitness that goes into the sledding events.

It is more a case of finding affinity with sports that I do or have done myself, as it gives me a much better insight into what is involved for those competing at this level. Sledding I have not had the opportunity to try (in a proper sled run anyway), so I do not feel the same attachment.

Still rate it way above curling

You have, at some point in your life, swept out your house haven't you?

Do you not, therefore, feel an affinity to curling?
