Re: Firearms!!!

I do , But I hate having to. My house has been burgled a few times, and I decided that I need to be able to protect my wife (and myself). Never used it in anger though, and hopefully will never have to.

I am actually quite good at shooting, I belong to a shooting club, with monthly target shooting competitions. Never won, but came close once or twice.
I had to do compulsary military service about 15 years ago, and obviously firearm training was involved.

Re: Firearms!!!

No......I dont see the need for them. I know of some people that use them for "sport", target practice and hunting but the less firearms the better I think.

On a related topic, a woman police officer was killed in the UK this past weekend (and another injured) by robbers using guns. So the question is being raised again if our police in the UK should all be issued with guns and not just the specialised firearms units. I still think the more that guns are available the more that people will die as a result.

Yes did the same thing, 2 Signal regiment, 230 battalion, the only operational signal battalion in the whole SANDF, just my luck.

@145 QV

I was in 32 Bn.........nuff said.
They had a torrid past, and were involved in a lot of "covert" dealings.
Not something to be proud of in the new South Africa

Re: Firearms!!!

I have a 12 bore Sabel side by side boxlock ejector. My flatmate has two 12 bores, a 20 bore, a 410 and a 22 rifle.

Re: Firearms!!!

Anyone seen Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore? I read the book too. I agree it is tainted and for a big part overstated with MM's opinion. But...

Thing that worries me the most: the stats show that gun/rifle related deaths or murders are, in ratio to gun ownership numbers per capita, overwhelmingly higher in the US than anywhere else. Doesn't that set of any alarms Mr. Bushy

Re: Firearms!!!

Hmm, the US does indeed have a major problem. It's not helped by the NRA and the government hyping up the scare threat though.

Unfortunately the UK government decided to ban shotguns and other firearms some time ago primarily due to the Dunblane massacre (very sad and unfortunate, especially knowing of people affected). However, precictably, gun crimes have since risen dramatically....

Guns don't kill people.....

Why not tackle the real problem?
And no, I don't own a firearm, and never intend doing so.

Re: Firearms!!!

Chris Rock said it best: "a single bullet should cost 5,000 dollars, then no unintentional deaths would occur. People would be asking themselves twice before firing"

Funny, but in a way true

Re: Firearms!!!

I used to do a bit of shooting when I was in the cadets at school, and then in the rifle club at college.

However, I have never owned a firearm......

....unless you count my old potato gun, that my brother nicked and subsequently lost

Not a hundred percent true. They've banned automatic weapons and handguns, but you can still have rifles and shotguns. You need a firearms license for a rifle and it's quite hard to get. You have to prove you have a need for it (My flatmate uses his for deer-stalking). Whereas it's your right to be able to have a shotgun and the onus is on the police to prove you shouldn't have one rather than you to say why you should.

I didn't really agree with the gun laws when they were brought in. The Dunblane thing was just used as an excuse. Most gunowners are pretty law abiding. The illegal guns are the ones that cause the problems on the whole and they'll be there whatever level of ban is in place on guns.

However, I do love the fact that guns are not particularly common in this country. It's a social thing rather than a law thing. The yanks just have a completely different attitude to guns than us.

I prefer more traditional weapons, hopefully sometime soon a Paul Chen Katana or Wakazashi will become part of my collection.

WOOHOO

Heh, one of my mates has one of the official replica's it's very cool although £130 is a little silly, it does make excellent noises when you swoosh it through the air and hit things with it though, almost like its real.

Re: Firearms!!!

I do. Was brought up with them. Had full bore rifles 'till '87 (thanks M Ryan) and handguns 'till '97 (thanks Scottish Police for allowing Hamilton to keep his after you were warned, many times about him).

Now have a old small bore (.22) rifle residing next to my bed due to the number of agrivated burglaries in our area where armed scum enter your house in night, threaten your family with their own guns and run off with you car.

If someone cares to beat my front door down after midnight then it's the hospital for them with lead poisoning (and court for me probably, although Warwickshire's Cheif Constable says we should take ALL steps to defend ourselves in outlying Villages).

Cheers,

Simon

Now you're talking. I want to move to Greece! Personally, I'd prefer my "old" Chezc made CZ75 9mm, fully modded (ported, trigger shoe, integrated laser sight etc). Those were the days It's probably paper clips now thanks to our stupid gun laws

Cheers,

Simon
