If you HAD to buy a German car...

...which one would it be?

I've not included Porsche as an option, because I'm thinking more of "normal" cars rather than semi-supercars.

Re: If you HAD to buy a German car...

My first car was a Polo and my last one was an A3 - if I couldn't get another Alfa then I would probably resort back to the A3....

I've voted Audi, for a nice old Quattro Coupe.
Although... would you all think any worse of me if I said that I could deal with having a Merc 190 Cosworth?

All true, but I hardly think we can hold it against them now, otherwise we'd have to think about the conduct of the likes of Mitsubishi (who manufactured planes) and even our own dear Fiat (who manufactured light tanks) during that period.

Right; want to be only a thinking about history and how many people forget.

Sometimes we think about german cars like a product of "upper minds"

Fiat made light tanks???? - i always thought were the prototype of fiat 500 tested in the lybian desert?

Good point. It is important not to forget the lessons taught by history, especially those learnt at the cost of millions of lives.

Re: If you HAD to buy a German car...

I would say Audi
And this comming from someone who's been driving a Beemer for the last two weeks
(in my defence, that's an X5, so not really a "normal" car )

Re: If you HAD to buy a German car...

BMW E30
I still have a soft spot for the old twin headlight and straight lines.

Would go for a 318is, 320 or 325 Sport. Ideally though the 318is (not be mistaken for the normal 318) which despite it's age pushed 140bhp as standard with a twin cam 16v and I'm pretty sure was chain driven too.
Rear drive in a car as light as a crisp packet with an engine pushing as much as the "modern" Alfa 1.8 16v. I think would be a great laugh !!!!

I dunno why a lot of peeps despise Beemers. Some of the drivers may be plonkers or see the car as a status symbol, but I've seen plenty of Alfa drivers with the same kinda car snobbery thing going on...and our cars are worth less (or is that worthless ???) when we sell.

Re: If you HAD to buy a German car...

Wouldn`t have any current Beemer with the possible exception of a 535D Touring.
Don`t like Mercs.
Don`t like current VWs (despite once being a fan) although I would make an exception for the new GTI.
Wouldn`t mind an Audi A4 or A6 Avant.Would love an RS6.
And thats it.

158bhp in fact. Not a lot really, although they were only 1.8's.

Didnt think it was that low, theres a lot of VW enthusiasts out there, so potentially a lot of tuning capabilities
