Moaning The Totally Impartial Ralf S. Reliability Survey

We all know about the JD Power and Top Gear "reliability" (actually satisfaction) surveys but I never been convinced about the subjectivity of the owners carrying out the survey, or indeed the weighting that equates the quality of the ownership experience vs. the perception of reliability. E.g. "Boot Space" on a GTV is going to make it "Less Reliable" than a Toyota Corolla.

So, I have started my own reliability survey but I need some help.

It's dead simple. On my drive to work and around the country, I see loads of cars on the side of the road, hood-up or just parked up on the hard shoulder.

Not all cars so parked are going to BE broken down - maybe driver is checking their map or in the bushes having a Jimmy Riddle - but on average this won't matter.

So, UNLESS the car obviously has a puncture.. just note down any car you see "broken down" since the beginning of August. During the month it will give us a definitive league table. Don't mention cars on break-down trucks as they are often used to move cars. Just anything that looks or could be broken down (any car stopped on a m/way but not with a puncture etc.)

My results so far are;

Peugeot 206
Audi A6
BMW 5 series
Saab 9-3

But Ralph, what about poor Alfa V6 owners who normally stop every few miles or so just to lift the bonnet and gaze in wonderment?

On way to and from GONAD:

1x Nissan Almera
1x Nissan Micra

Both with bonnets up, clearly broken down. One in the eye for Japanese reliability.

Mind you, when I got to Oakwell hall, you wouldn't believe the amount of Alfas I saw with their bonnets up

Re: The Totally Impartial Ralf S. Reliability Survey

Sorry to say I saw an "R" reg 156 with it's bonnet up about 5 miles from Oakwell ...that means I'm the first to add Alfa to the survey...*hangs head in shame*

Also saw an old cavalier at the next roundabout.

We can disregard the v6 as it is obviously variator-free and bomb-proof.

I was busy over the weekend.. been to Brummie and back..

BMW 5 series
BMW 7 series
Suzuki Vitara
Ford Escort
Mercedes C-class
Peugeot 206

Are you keeping tabs on this or should we do a reply with qutoe and amend the figures each time?

Doesn't the 205 get a by, coz of its age and the probability that it's been thrashed all its life?

Re: The Totally Impartial Ralf S. Reliability Survey

Hang on I see a flaw in this survey... Let's say we have 100 BMW's and 10 Alfa's running in a circle on a circuit somewhere. After several hours you get 10 BMW's braking down against 1 Alfa. That would equate to 10 percent of both marques developing a fault even though more BMW's have broken down than Alfa's...

Get my point?

It's hard enough to see an Alfa on the road (more these days for sure) yet BMW's, Vaux's, Pug's, etc. are 2 a penny!

I think that's and irony reflected in the thread title. Ralf is too smart not to realise that...........................I think

Re: The Totally Impartial Ralf S. Reliability Survey

In the interests of impartiality I should mention that I have to add my own car! which had to be towed after its last track day
(Possibly a timing belt related issue, but it hasn't been looked at yet.)

Cheers, sorry I mean sobs,

TB

RE: the below point we can just divide by market share percentage or something. Hmm maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that..

Re: The Totally Impartial Ralf S. Reliability Survey

Lunchtime today I saw a 2002 Vectra being towed by the AA, and on the way back a 1996 Merc C class with the AA tending to it.

Doesn't count as it wasn't a roadside breakdown
(Sorry about the car BTW)

Re: The Totally Impartial Ralf S. Reliability Survey

I spotted a handful of motors in trouble on the M25 today - must be the weather:

3 Series (v hot and bothered rep on the mobile)
Mondeo
Astra (old shape X-reg)
MGB

and they are just the ones I can remember!

I'll keep my peepers peeled (and a notepad ready!) on my return trip to Basingstoke tomorrow...

Re: The Totally Impartial Ralf S. Reliability Survey

Three cars over the last three days.....

BMW
Audi
Mercedes

....and not a single Alfa, also worth noting is that they were all pretty new models.
