Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

I've had a couple of 'duels' with Fiat Coupe 16V drivers in the past and even got a wave off a guy in a Broom Yellow 20VT this evening which got me thinking.....

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

It's a work of art, but it does not look like an alfa, so, I'm afraid its a no no for me.

However, being a sexy fiat isn't such a bad thing

it shud have worn a Lancia badge (well the 16v turbo anyway)

actually wot were the FIAT cars of the time that used a 16v Lampredi turbo - did the Chroma have a version with that poerplant - and were there any Alfa's with it?

AFAIK, the 155 Q4 is a Fiat twincam engine, not sure whether it's the Lampredi engine or not?

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

Hmm...
Interesting one that.
One answer: Yes, coz then I could still be an Alfa Owner

I think you could certainly say that, had it been sold as an Alfa from the start, it would not have been out of place. In fact, some of the styling (the slashes particularly) are quite reminiscent of Alfa's of the same era.

But having been a Fiat, it is ingrained in peoples minds as a Fiat now, so that's what it is.

Shouldn't the question be the other way around since Alfas demise in the 80s shouldn't they all be wearing Fiat badges

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

It shouldn't have an Alfa badge, Fiat need to have sporty models too. Its not as if they have only been producing shopping cars and boring family saloons over the years and suddenly wanted to make a sports car. They've had some lovely sports cars over the years, Dino, X1/9, 131 Coupe, 124 coupe/spider.
They can't hand over everything remotely sporty to Alfa, they have to keep some of that sporting passion, they are an Italian car maker afterall.
Drove a 20v Turbo a few years back and it was great fun. Wheels spinning all over the place when the turbo kicked in, brilliant.

Voted no. It fitted into Fiats history of coupes rather well. Besides there was the small matter of Alfa having the GTV at the same time...

No for me too - I regarded the coupe as the true successor to the Fiat 128 3p & 128 Coupe but did not really sell as well as its 128 predecessors which was a pity - never drove one myself either

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

If the GTV wasn't around then maybe, but given a choice between the two its a no contest for me personally despite having a hefty admiration for the coupe.

I just think the GTVs Jaw dropping looks and 3.0V6 engine will live long in the memory and it wil be marked down as a classic in the annals that matter.
The Fiat 20v Turbo coupe, in all its sony walkman yellow glory was a transient flash of adrenalin.
You don't see many yellow ones about now.

I think thats the test - a future classic has to still look cool in its "signature colour" 15 years later.
In Ireland at least most coupes are now found lurking about in lighter colours like silver which dilute the funky discord of the original design.

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

funny you should say that considering the fiat coupe 20vt's signature colour is sprint blue i.e. fiat abarth's racing colours!!!
i was in the position a few years ago to choose between a fiat coupe 20vt and an alfa gtv6.i drove both and chose the fiat!!its a more practical car, faster, better handling, imo better looking cos i hate the gtv's rear end!i bought the fiat btw!
but as with all cars its down to personal choice!be boring if we all drove the same cars unless they only made pagani zonda roadsters!!!

liked sandy comment that shouldnt all alfas have been given the fiat badge!!

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

True, I'll have to admit to not being up on classic Fiat racing history

I really just meant yellow was IMHO the color that made the biggest impression on reviewers and the general public at the time.
If you do a quick google image search you will see people liked to take photos mostly of yellow ones

True the 20v turbo is slightly quicker in a straight line than the GTV, I didn't think the coupe generally was acclaimed as a better handler though.
Horses for courses I would guess, the purity of N/A throttle response at the expense of a little more nose weight, Vs the fun and games of turbo power delivery on corner exit in a FWD car.

They do make a very good value second hand buy if they have been looked after, and you can afford the insurance for the turbo.

Cheers,
TB

Voted no. It doesnt need alfa badge to be better or more sporty. Its great car, and fiat should be proud to have cars like coupe or barchetta.

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

Not sure if it's true but I'm told the Fiat Coupe is a Chris Bangle design. If so his earlier work sealed his reputation as the BM 7/5/3/ designs are IMHumbleO truly awful.

A pretty four seater coupe with a useable boot and shared engine - Alfa GT of course! The Fiat Coupe was never directly replaced so I can only assume that internally they deemed a Lancia or Alfa more fitting.

Had it been a VW it would have been a VW, AUDI, Skoda and a SEAT!

Yes it's true. The Exterior of the car was designed by Chris Bangle, while the interior was designed by Pininfarina (although it wore a Pininfarina badge on the outside too). It's been said that the design of the headlights was a profile of his wife's rear end while lying down.
I think his first BMW design was the Z4, which is a beautiful car. The problem IMO, was they tried to carry the design hues on to the rest of the BMW range & it just doesn't work.

From what I recall I thought the Coupe was pretty much the same as the GTV but I may stand corrected!

Nice car though, especially in 20v Turbo form. Still looks good today

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

I didn't know that they shared too much, they may have shared some parts for all I know but I don't think the Coupe had the passive rear wheel steer multi link suspension of the GTV, and
obviously the engines, interior and exterior were wildly different.
They have very different driving experiences anyway thats for sure.

No, I don't think there's much the same at all actually. They're both based on the Tipo platform, but that's about it.
Except the later ones stole the GTV's steering rack.

Re: Could/Should The Fiat Coupe Have Worn An Alfa Romeo Badge?

nope, it should be a Fiat.

TBH, I don't think the Fiat's style is quite in keeping with styling theme of Alfa coupes. By that I mean the Fiat looks racy, avant-garde, super sassy and very tasty, where as Alfa coupes have a more discrete beauty to them, IMHO. The Fiat's shape shouts for your attention, where as Alfa coupes silence you with their shapes.

I think it's a lovely looker, though - and I remember when I first saw pics of it, I was chuffed to bits for Fiat.
