Warning Can you reverse a Car & Trailer?

Can you do this task?

I usually have to at least 3 or 4 times a week & find it a *challenge* as the rear visibility is soooo bad from the 156. Also the turning circile is crap in a 156.

Re: Can you reverse a Car & Trailer?

Have done a few times in the past. VW LT 28 with a similar length trailer on the back. The trick is to not over-steer. Small inputs, well timed, as you only need to change the angle of the car very slightly to get a much bigger change in direction on the trailer.
Only a personal thing, but I try to keep the van as close to straight on from the trailer as possible, even when turning a corner with it, it gives you more scope for change. If you get the trailer at a large angle there's only one way to change it's direction: go forwards again.

I'm proud to have voted -NO- as trailers involve towballs, which I view as an abhorance and a curse on society in general..................

I had a go at it in a mates Volvo at the local tip a few years ago, managed to jack-knife the thing and had to get out and unhitch it while folk laughed at me

Re: Can you reverse a Car & Trailer?

I was bringing a car back from the UK to Ireland last year (my Alfasud) was using my Caddy van with double axle transporter hitched on to it.
I had just installed Sat nav to my van and trusted it completely to get me where I wanted to go - but then it started raining heavily with some lightening and thunder and I was 'instructed' to turn left. I duly obeyed only to see that I had been guided into a cul-de sac (dead end street.
Oh dear try reversing out of that in lashing rain & thunder trying to avoid parked cars and little old ladies in the dark - NOT fun.

Lesson don't let technology take over the controls - the human brain still has its uses

Re: Can you reverse a Car & Trailer?

I can manage it fine if I take my time to think about what I'm doing. I hate people trying to help!

This is something women are generaly crap at, but the wife's superb at it. So guess who the 'help' is usually coming from?

Can usually do it OK, had a lot of experience using tractors & trailers as a kid but since moving off the farm around 15 years ago I don't have as much practice.

I usually find I either get it spot on first time, or make a complete mess and have to take 3 or 4 attempts

I had to get a towbar on my 147 but it's a detachable one so it doesn't look quite so hideous.

This can prove to be one of the biggest tests of communication between partners. Especially if there are onlookers

Best advice to someone trying to guide a reversing trailer or caravan is DONT SAY ANYTHING unless a collision is imminent. YOU WILL NOT BE THANKED.

yep, no bother at all. My brother taught me to drive LGV so I can just about reverse anything except a draw-bar. Don't have a tow bar fitted to the GT as it would completely spoil it. Get my pal to tow the boat using his big Laguna diesel estate. Secret is to use very small movements and have very big mirrors! Also when you see the trailer appearing in the mirror turn steering wheel into it to correct jack-knife. try it; it works.

There is a brilliant online game somewhere that lets you test yourself - good fun - bl00dy difficult tho!

If I find the line I will post it, unless someone beats me to it

Re: Can you reverse a Car & Trailer?

I have to confess we used to own one of those big plastic boxes on wheels so I got quite used to towing. But the worst part of any Holiday was reversing the thing back down the drive.
Once I had swung in backwards off the road, I had to thread it between the House wall and a 2 foot drop at the edge of the drive, the drive was cambered toward the house, so if the wheel was a foot clear of the house, the top of the Van would still hit the drainpipe on the house, with about 3 inches (76mm) of clearance to the pipe, I had about 9 inches (229mm) to play with before the other wheel went off the edge, if I wasn't exactly parallel it would quickly go pear shaped.
It was also quite steeply sloped, so there was slim chance of doing it manually without the Car attached.
