Re: Which Car Is Best?

156 for me but thats only because at the moment everything I have to get into the car fits (3 teenagers, tent etc)

Having thrown around a 147 for a week (loan car) and if I didnt have the aforementioned kids and tent etc to get in it would be the 147 for me.

Well Happy Re: Which Car Is Best?

What a strange poll
147 or 156 eh?..........that got me thinking for a second, till I saw the "other" option.....
Why tis clearly the GTV

Of course this means the door is open for someone on hard drugs to extoll the virtues of the Alfa 90 or Arna

Re: Which Car Is Best?

this poll should be more like...which car do you own

147 and 156 are very simillar cars but serve different purspose...for me a single 26year old I prefer the 147...we I get old...chieldren etc...then the 159 or maybe the new 148

I have owned RWD and Front wheel drive and both are a compromise.
Neither are the best in all situations .

Never had an AWD so maybe that is the ideal

Thats right. But that is when personal preference comes in. As far as AWD goes its not ideal because it slows cars off the line and it is less predictable in my opinion.

With AWD the limits of grip are further away. That sounds good, but it also means the car is less entertaining at the same speed.

Very true........I've driven a tuned Subaru and you really have to be flying to be getting near its limit and on the road that's not exactly safe !!

Re: Which Car Is Best?

I rarely use the car to carry more than two people (including myself), but my vote still goes to the 156.

I think the proportions are absolutely perfect, and the design has captured something (that I can't quite put my finger on) that no other car on the road has .

Quite simply, I think it is the most beautiful car you can buy. The fact that it drives well is a bonus .

I think so.

I am so crazy to say my 166 diesel (but only because I need such type of car)

For my heart, my favourites are:

1 Brera (maybe, seen only in photos)
2 GT
3 spider
4 gtv
4-bis 164
5 159 (maybe, seen only in photos)
6 147
7 156
8 166

I just don't like small cars ... so naturally it's 156

(and it has nothing to do whit that fact that I own one)

Re: Which Car Is Best?

Despite owning a 147 I voted 156.I think it will be better rembered than the 147 in years to come, as it was a real surprise car from Alfa at the time, and genuinely competitive when it was first out.The fact that its styling won so much critical acclaim seals it.

Re: Which Car Is Best?

Having driven both the 147 & 156, on performance alone, I don't think there's much in it. I do prefer the flexibilty the larger 156 gives, especially when you have to take 3 / 4 colleagues out on occasions.

Add in the awesome styling, prestige and award winning status, and this confirms it for me

Re: Which Car Is Best?

I've had both (156 2.5 Q-System SW, 147 GTA) - wish I could have kept them both. I like the extra space of the 156SW, and the beautiful curved surfaces (not another wagon on the market that can touch it's sculpted beauty), but I like having a 3.2 engine in the smaller, lighter body. Though I am 43, it is my first 3 door - didn't know until I came onto this forum that 3 doors can't be considered sports cars. For me though, it sure FEELS and LOOKS like a sports car - I find the 147 GTSA astonishingly beautiful, and just a joy to drive (and the SS makes it that much more interesting!). Would have considered a 156 GTA SW if it weren't so much more expensive than the 147. I guess the long and short of it is, I find them both fantastic cars and wouldn't complain if I was forced to give up one in order to drive the other.

Re: Which Car Is Best?

156... nice conservative styling, wide open interior ,less sporty feel. Not much "presence" on the road i.e. blends in with the rest of the traffic.
Car is a genuine Alfa Romeo for the business executive.

147...more radical styling , more claustrophobic interior which makes the car more intimate and sporty. An Alfa Romeo with pizzaz . A car you should not drive if you wish to be anonymous

Re: Which Car Is Best?

Looking to swap the 147 for a 156sw so can only agree on comments regarding the added versatility,as its the very reason we are looking to change.Following the test drive I`d forgotten just how similar they are to drive, although I reckon the 156 has a slightly better ride and a lighter clutch.

Re: Which Car Is Best?

As lovely as my 145 is to drive cross country, the Elise beats any car I have ever driven full stop.

Early S1 Elise with perf upgrades and sports suspension. Non of the extra weight of the newer ones and the early "likes to lift-off oversteer" mid-engined handling.

There is very little that'll provide the same cross country thrills.

Had it fives years this week and still love it to bits.

Re: Which Car Is Best?

having owned both I will say the 156 - wish I had bought an SW though, really like those and the extra space would be nice. Loved my 147 but think the 156 is more 'me' - whatever that means..........
