Re: Digital cameras

Someone who can make or source good lenses is my first criteria
Then worry about Megapixels
Then ease of use

That's the order in which I look

Having said all that I still use film in my Pentax

There really is no other option ... it has to be canon ... I have always though that when you make something, you can not do something else (does that make any sence ???)

Re: Digital cameras

Pasi, you have made Hewlett Packard a choice, as well as Samsung and Epson, when there's no way on Earth that they would ever make the best digital cameras.

You've missed out KonicaMinolta, Panasonic (using Leica lenses) and Kodak (even though Kodak cameras are more like toys these days).

I'd like to vote for KonicaMinolta or Canon, because that's all I have experience with, but since KonicaMinolta isn't on your list, I will have to vote for 'other', which will make the results of the poll inaccurate.

Come on, you can do better than this

Talking about SLR's,

"Minolta makes the best bodies, Nikon the best optics and Canon the best compromise."

Really Pasi, you forgot to put KonicaMinolta on the list, but that is very good brand.

Agreed with the comments on Nikon and Canon, haven't tried Minolta so I can't say.

@Pasi, are you talking digital SLR or point and shoot type? And where are Panasonic and Leica?

Re: Digital cameras

Canon as best allrounder.

@Gotcha: The Konicaminolota's are getting slagged off for their handling and autofocus and I think Leitz and Carl Ziess would have something to say about the Nikon's optics. I think for hammering in nails, Nikon's are the bees knees though

Re: Digital cameras

So here's my humble opinion:

I pick Canon. It's not easy to give an answer as there are a lot of points where Canon makes the diference. After hearing some professional photographers saying that they would be more happy with a sheap Canon body and an "L" serie lens instead of a top of the line Nikon... I now understand why. Canon makes some of the best lenses you can find. Yes, there are some other manufacturers (like CZ) but a digital camera is not just about lenses. And Canon also has some of the best bodies money can by. The conjunction of this 2 factors are like gold over blue velvet.

We can say it's the best best allrounder, as Fraser said. But that's not negative as we could think: balance is not always the best solution. In this case, it's not good, it's outstanding.

But this doesn't mean the others are rubish. Not at all. Konica/Minolta stills developing a lot of new things (as they did before with film ). The anti shock system embedded behind the sensor, instead of puting it on any lense is an example, even if it needs more work...

On the other hand, Nikon has to deal with outsiders technology... like some of its sensors. Sony is providing sensores to Nikon but many people don't know that. Actually, that's probably the only thing Sony knows to do. And I'm not saying they do it badly.

Also, don't forget Kodak. We might be used to hear about Kodak when we talk about sheap film cameras but Kodak has been working very well with digital (top end cameras).

My 2cents.

I didnt think at brands like Leitz and Carl Ziess, as most of amateur and even most photographer choose between these three marks. There are superior optics like canon or nikon do, but they are so expensive that only limited group of photographers can afford to use them.

Regarding Konicaminolota, I dont know about compact cameras but have you tried Minolta Dynax7 film or 7D DSLR? The handling is perfect and they have functions you wouldnt even wish by Canon/Nikon.

Anyway I will stick to Canon. Not because it is best in all fields /only in 90% /, but I allready have some SLR equipment and changing the brand would be soooo expensive.

@Hugo: There will always be debates between Nikon vs Canon users, like the way Alfa owners argue endlessly with BMW owners.

That's often the case. I'm still convincing a friend of mine to switch to Canon (he's been a Nikon user from start), but I don't think he'll go for it.

You know what's interesting? Some people have preferences towards a certain brand, and they really do believe their brand is better than others. I'm talking about two different brands that share the same camera hardware, made on the same production line, by the same company, using more or less the same parts. (By now you may have guessed the two brands.)

Re: Digital cameras

I have no idea what the best digital camera is and I don't really care. The best equipment will probably way too expensive for the average amature.

I am very satisfied with the qualities of my camera (Konicaminolta Dimage X50). It is a 5 megapixel camera and I even think the video quality is not too bad either. I really like the fact that the camera housing is really small: 62 mm x 84 mm x 24 mm.
