"AP - A day before he was elected Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger made clear the type of church he wants: one that rigidly upholds absolute truths on matters such as abortion and homosexuality.

Marriage for priests and female ordination will also stay out.

After one of the fastest papal votes in a century, the new pontiff will most certainly build upon the uncompromising and hardline doctrine that he charted previously as the late Pope John Paul II's theological enforcer.

His election will thrill conservatives seeking a consolidation of John Paul's policies.

It will alienate more liberal Catholics, particularly in Europe and North America, who had hoped that after 26 years, a more progressive pope might take the helm of the world's 1.1 billion Catholics......"

If the average Catholic is lucky , their God will take this old ultra Conservative real quick...on second thoughts, he will probably be around for decades to come as God is sick of this type of person trying to get into heaven

Quite a few reports I saw before he was elected suggested that they would choose a much older man this time so that he wouldn't be round for as long as the last chap. And that would appear to be what they have done.

Re: New Pope?

Oh good. I'm glad it's a reasonable person, who wants to use their position of absolute religious power to enrich people's lifes
No, it's a withered old fart, who wants to make everyone elses life as miserable as his own.
If there is a God, I hope he makes sure people like this get exactly what they deserve.

Re: New Pope?

Oh hurrah!!! Another religious zealot to lead 1.1 billion catholics in a crusade against common sense and progress. I can see this leading to world peace and harmony......

I have no problem with religion - that is a personal choice - I do, however, have a problem with the church (any church) which inevitably reflects all of man's weaknesses and corruption, while purporting to offer guidance and support to the vulnerable.....

Re: New Pope?

People in the poorest countries need the most help and look towards religion to guide them thought hard times. Unfortunately many of the problems are modern mans making, such as the spread of HIV and population control, education etc. But their leader (The Pope) will tell them contraception is wrong, so they will have unprotected sex and die.

Counties such as Brazil and especially South Africa (Highest Catholic concentrations in the world) will not be here much longer if the church and the political powers do not send out a consistent message.

Re: New Pope?

I like the Pope, he smokes dope.

I agree with the above statements. Not that I am a Catholic, but on behalf of Catholics, I was hoping for a more progressive Pope. However I put don't care as I guess it's none of my business really.

I'm afraid so... I will never forsake Catolicism, but I may refrain from following the more arcaic "mandates". I myself am becoming more and more progressive.

Thumbs Up Re: New Pope?

I should be Pope
I'm sure I'd pick up the guff easily enough and would'nt mind giving it some "Charlie large potatoes" to a big'ol crowd in that square they use.....not really keen on the get up though,I be more casually attired
The buggers could have asked me,I'm bored with the refrigeration lark and a bit of religious mania sounds like a natural progression...............

Re: New Pope?

I don't care. (without the "?" ) That doesn't have any meaning for me. Actually something funny happen...

In Portuguese, Pope is writen as Papa. But papa also means food. Now, minutes before I had my dinner, my mom said to me: "we have papa". And I said: "great, I'm starving!"

I never thought about that kind of Papa!

Re: New Pope?

In some countries Papa might mean father.... Does the portugese word originate to the days when you folks ate your parents after reaching a certain age???

Re: New Pope?

Papa is also a sweet way to call our father. But I don't think it has anything to do with eat our papas.

Re: New Pope?

When I was in my teens in the late 70's I was in a folk group choir. We used to have regualr gigs at the local church at Sunday mass. We used to put a groovey twist to all the hymes - much to the shock of the blue rinse brigade.
Guitars and drums were an amazing departure from previous choirs who usually were all in their 60's, you know - pillars of society types. I thought it would be my break into showbiz - never happened though

Then I thought religion was moving with the times - but since then it has sunk back into the dark ages - this Pope just proves that that trend is continuing

Re: New Pope?

Well the old adage about the Enclave process is
1) Day one for man
2) Day two for the Devil
3) Day three for God

So presumably Benedict XVI is the Devil's man

Re: New Pope?

I won't worry about him too much - well I mean he is not exactly the picture of health is he so I reckon this is just a short interim holding pontificate.
Its the next pope that will tell us the true direction of the catholic church
