Who gives the best customer service?

So, where do you get the best face-to-face customer
service when purchasing things?

We spend our hard earned readies, but is it just
right to hand them over to any old shop or
for any old service or should we expect a little
more?

Personally I find opticians around the globe to offer
the best service in terms of advice, statifaction
and after sales care. (Glasses need adjusting?
just pop into any of them and they'll do it for free,
even if you've never bought anything from that particular
one! )

Customer Service in the UK is rock bottom imho. Few independent businesses do make a decent fist of it, but in general the big guys are all S**t.

i guess we get what we deserve tho if we dont complain

Re: Who gives the best customer service?

I have recently come back from a hotel holiday in Italy, and the service was exemplary. Hotel staff in Italy are poorly paid so depend on ''tips'' to supplement their wages, this, therefore, helps improve customer service.

The service was really very good throughout the hotel

Depends on where you go I suppose, I've had excellent and not so excellent experiences at different places for everything in that list.

Not round here they won't. Some will ask for a charity donation (which I don't really object to) and some will just come straight out and ask for the cash.

I can't recall the last time I had memorably good customer service in the UK - we seem to specialise in either total indifference or fawning unctiousness with little in between. Possibly unsurprising given that customer-facing roles are often low-pay, low-status roles dealing with some of the most objectionable and gratuitously unpleasant people on the planet. I've generally found better service (but also some of the very worst) abroad - certainly more variety, even if that does result in truly diabolical and / or comical service at times.

Re: Who gives the best customer service?

I'ver found small pockets of really good service recently. But, I tend to think it's down to the individuals rather than company policy in those cases. I've yet to find good customer care from a car dealer.

Re: Who gives the best customer service?

When I had a works Mercedes I was impressed by Tony Purslow in Epsom. I needed a new battery (works didn't want me to fit a Halfords jobbie.. insisted on a pukka works Mercedes battery, even though the original had just failed.. )

Booked my car in and got it back (while I waited) with a new battery and somehow completely valeted inside 30 minutes.

Later that day, Natasha phoned me up.. not for a date worst luck.. but to see if "everything was alright".

Still.. at £60 labour to fit a battery (£240 all in) I suppose they could afford to pamper me.

Take Away. Both the Chinese and Indian that we use call me by name when I walk in (don't really use ether of them more than once a month). If they are late having your order ready or you turn up and order a takeaway they give you 1/2 a Kingfisher at the Indian.

The young lady staring into my eyes at the Opticians is OK as well.

Mine slip in a large bottle of Cobra.

Anyway, if we're going to name and praise, had a wonderful, amazingly cheap meal with excellent service here the other weekend Welcome to the Bell Hotel - Saxmundham - Enjoy Your Stay after reading loads of good reviews - e.g. The Bell Hotel, Saxmundham, Suffolk - Reviews, Food & Drink - The Independent - has been awarded a Bib Gourmand as well.

Saxmundham is a weird place though - really wish we'd stayed elsewhere and just gone there for the meal.

Little plug here...TOPES in Rochester. Beautiful food, excellent service and very reasonable for a special night out @£55 2-3 courses with wine. 2 AA stars. You won't be disappointed.

Re: Who gives the best customer service?

After falling out with Halifax a few years ago and switching my backing to Firstdirect, they have been and remain excellent.

They adhere to the simple principle that when I phone them somebody answers the call and deals with whatever it is I need doing efficiently and courteously.

Re: Who gives the best customer service?

Good service from a bank is pretty unique in my experience. Random examples from the idiots I bank with:

HSBC - lost £700 when I tried to pay a bill by phone - made them repeat exactly what I'd said to them back to me as I had a feeling they'd mess it up, but the money still vanished into the ether, with the bill still needing paying. Lost the record of my complaint. 1 month later, get the money back plus a grudging apology.

Barclays - repeatedly ballsed up opening an ISA for me, and when they finally did do it, they managed to open two up instead of one. By a total fluke I happened to have a few grand sitting in my current account, or else the cheque would have bounced.

ICICI - an Indian bank. Their anti-laundering precautions on opening an account are more demanding than getting security clearance with MI6. Then, they send out incorrect log-in information that means that after all the hassle, I now have a high-interest account with the grand total of £1 stuck in it.

I get perfect service from my bank.

Not only rare for a bank, but even more
rare because it is in France. ( )

But if anyone needs good banking in France, get in touch
with the International Branch of Banque Populaire in Nice.
(Boulevard Victor Hugo)
Staffed by English speakers (Mostly Brits) who will give
you a service and advice the likes of which you've not
seen in +30 years.

Is that common over there? I have absolutely no experience of high street banking but a change of scenery is always appealing, and my French is pretty good

For the worst ever service, it's just dawned on me that whilst service in the, er, service sector in Poland is excellent, for real, unparalelled misanthropy you have to try to pay a utility or tax bill there, or worse still, buy a train ticket. That type of office seem to be entirely staffed by women who lost the best years of their lives to communism and martial law, and make sure that anybody young-ish (foreign or Polish) knows about it, with a level of hostility that even Malev Hungarian can't match.

No way, French banks are normally staffed by utter ****ers.

This is a one-of-a-kind branch. No other Banque Populaire (or any
French or English bank for that matter) will give you the kind of service level
they give from this branch.

Re: Who gives the best customer service?

I agree with Nev and find the best customer service (in the uk) is from the opticians, for example, contact lens fell out, lost. Rang optician and they sorted out a spare with eye wash and antiseptic wipes waiting for me within 10 mins. Fantasic service.

Other than that, best customer service would be everywhere in the States

Re: Who gives the best customer service?

There are so many "other".

I have BT internet which has been awful recently. I have made so many calls and gone through the standard service script which made me reboot, enter passwords, do it again, "and again please sir" - whilst they try to sort it. And when it doesn't work - well we go through the whole scenario again.

Today the connection went down again. Sigh. I phoned up and actually got through to I guy I could have a conversation with. He started suggesting all of the standard stuff (let's do a master password reset etc. etc.). I explained that I had done all of this many times before. He said "fine - lets skip all of that then". We then, had a reasonable conversation about why it probably didn't work, interspersed with general chat about, life, the universe and everything whilst we were waiting whilst he did stuff, tried a few things and - low and behold - I can now post here.

My point? - despite whichever organisation you are dealing with , on occasion, you come across a person who will recognise who they are talking to. When you do then you realise that true customer service is employing staff with the ability to talk to people naturally.

Paul.
