Which type of lawnmower do you own?

My lawn mower has just gone bang and I'm in need of a new one. I wanted a petrol rotary but they are more expensive than an electric. My son wants a hover and says he will mow the lawn regularly if we get one. So what do you have and why?

I have a E R but never use it. The Garden service does the cutting every 2 weeks

Was tempted to get one of those automatic robot mowers ... just couldn't justify the cost ...

A Flymo Chevron with a nice rear roller. Excellent. Alos use my neighbours petrol rotary from time to time and while it's easier, the results aren't as good.

A battery charged push mower, just bought it and it's the quietest lawnmower we've ever had. The battery lasts for just enough time to do the front and back with a bit of muscle power to help it along.

My old Suffolk Punch died a couple of weeks ago. I've replaced it with a Bosch Rotak electric rotary. It's got a rear roller, so it gives the striped effect & will cut right up to fences, etc. - saves a lot of messing about with the strimmer!

Re: Which type of lawnmower do you own?

Both a Hover and a petrol cylinder...

The hover does the rough bits and the Suffolk Punch cuts the lawn.

But it all depends on what type of garden you have....

If you've just got a bit of grass that needs hacking back once a fortnight then a hover is very good....

If you have a lawn that needs cutting once or twice a week a cylinder will give the best result but you will then become a lawn bore. You will eradicate weeds mercilessly and you will feed and nurture the grass. You will keep an eye on the weather forecasts and will time your cutting accordingly. Of course you will use a top dressing at least once a season and will have an annual rake to remove thatch. You will spike and aerate the lawn in the autumn and you will not let the leaves lie on it. The edges will have to be trimmed neatly at the same time as you cut.....

My advice

.....

Buy a hover..... and make sure your Son sticks to the bargain

Re: Which type of lawnmower do you own?

Cheapo petrol rotary - the leads on the electric ones drive me mad!
Mine is great, starts first time every time and has been going strong for a few years. My mate bought one similar though, and he's pulled the starting cord out. He's tried to get it fixed, but has been told they are "throw away" engines - no spares available When I get another I'll get one with a branded engine that parts are available for.
The main problem is at the current prices it costs a fiver to fill the mower up!

Hover, but our grass is about 3ft tall, so I may not be the best person to offer advice.

I had (was made ) to clear a circle around the whirly line last week, because the clothes were touching the grass.

Re: Which type of lawnmower do you own?

Chucked my cheapo rotary into the bushes at the bottom of the garden two weeks ago: biggest pile of you-know-what. Massive vibration, hard to start, dreadful wheels, noisy.. (Performance power or some such from B&Q Depot). Lasted 18 months.

Last weekend bought a Stiga 16" petrol mulching mower (319). Really quiet, easy to start and adjust cutting height and no faffing about with the grass box because it hasn't got one. Doesn't pick up and blow out dust. Should have bought one years ago. Downsides are it needs to be used more frequently so the mulched clippings are driven down into the grass below and it might not be so good if the grass is really wet.

Oh and I forgot: it's a nice shade of yellow.
