Easy ones first, The Merc is an awful looking thing. I expect it's very quick but that's not what this is about. The Galaxie looks way better in 2-door pillarless form. The Rapide just looks like someone said "We need a saloon car" but they all wanted to go to the pub. Whack a foot in the wheelbase, slap on a couple of doors, job done. You can't honestly say that it looks as good as the 2-door cars. The 508 is a mess of angles and lights. The Rover is stylish and classy but it's like the understudy to the big guns in this group. Of the 2 Jags and the Bentley, I'm going with the S1 XJ. I love the slim pillars, the subtle use of chrome, the simple wheel design. It's a mix of style, class and subtlety. The other 2 have some of this too but I prefer the shape of the older Jag.

Without pictures I am going for the Rapide or... It is not a car I would ever consider.
Now my next choice is out of character but the pictures of both interior and exterior are impressive and I think my favourite in this group.

I'm not telling but some will know and the rest won't give a ****. Pictures please Mr .KB.

If it's that crappy Pug I'm going to get a massive banner made that says Malc loves French cars and pin it up outside your house.

Right, stacked headlights for me are better than pop-ups.
The 508 I know why I like it. The interior is really nice IMHO, but correct me if I am wrong, it is the 'best looking' and that's not really the interior. The exterior is typical.

Similarly with the Galaxie. I mean it's a typical square looking and dare I say generic for it's time period, then it has to be the Aston.

That is a pretty car and if I could I would.

But you'd buy the 2-door. Same with the Galaxie.

Well, yes both the Rapide and Galaxie would be fun/weekend cars so there'd be no point in getting 4 doors, heck I don't need four seats.

If I could afford to run a Rapide daily though......

So what you're saying is that the best looking four door cars in this group are four door versions of cars that are much better looking when they only have 2 doors.

I've gone with the Rover. Better than either Jag (now if it was a Mk2...). I do like the Rapide and I actually think the spoiler on the AMG improves the look and balance of the design (without it you feel like it's just melting into the ground). The Pug isn't so pig ugly as just a bit bland.

It is an interesting point. Does it being prettier as a 2 door mean it can't be the prettiest 4 door? Hmm...

You'd like to think that something designed from the outset to be this car would have an advantage over something adapted.
But man, I like Astons. I think from anything but a side view it's the best looking car of this group. And even from the side I'm not seeing anything overpower it.
So while I see Keithyboy's point, the Aston is getting my vote from this group.

Not necessarily. In this case, the front and back of it look great because it's an Aston but the profile, the very aspect which makes it eligible for this competition, is compromised. It's more a 4-door coupe than a 4-door saloon.

I expect it'll probably win overall because it's an Aston but how many of you, with an unlimited budget and a genuine need for a 4-door car with 4 proper seats, would actually buy one of these?

An unlimited daily car list for me has always had an Aston on it (although the blue oval ties diminished the kudos of the brand, I've got over it... even when they started trying the Aston grille on the Ford, and I won't start on the "little" Aston...) so I would certainly consider it if it ticked all the relevant boxes.

But isn't the point that people with unlimited budgets thinking they are needing buy Range Rovers, SUVs and Bentleys?.?

That's an interesting question as well. I can't think of what else I'd buy instead of it mind you, ignoring that the unlimited budget would probably lead me to get an estate and a Coupe or a Convertible rather than a saloon anyway.

If I were in the market in the 60s it might be a P5. In the 70s it might be an XJ S1. I don't like the big grille of the latest Rapide at all but it's still a thing of beauty. It matters to me not one jot that it isn't quite as pretty as the two door equivalent.

I fully accept that I'm in the minority on this one. Based on voting so far it looks like a David and Goliath battle between the Rapide and the 156.

Garage
I was fortunate to have a Rapide for a couple of hours, I didn't like the look at first, but when you drive it you forget about the looks and the extra 2 doors, I never smiled so much in 2 hours it sounds and goes like the devil.

So you had to drive it in order to put the key aspect of it which brings it within the scope of this poll out of your mind?

What you're describing is the 4-door car with the best looking 2-door sibling then?

Nice to see the Bentley get a vote. Much less vulgar than a Rolls.
