Rigged. Alfas should have been banned (I'm voting 159 as soon as it appears and I'll keep voting for it until it wins or is out). Did I just type that aloud?

The 156 facelift is the first to fall, I don't dislike it at all but I prefer the original. The M5 is next. If the question was best saloon car it could easily win but I think previous incarnations looked better. The XE looks sharp and modern but I like old stuff. The Triumph is quite handsome but I've always felt that the glasshouse is slightly out of proportion. The CX is wacky and bonkers and I love it but it's not the best looking in this group. The Merc and the Lincoln are both great looking but I'm going with the original 156 as the prettiest saloon for many a year when new.

I'm a bit late with this question, but:

I really like the XE. But is it necessarily better looking than the XF?

If the 156 hadn't been facelifted, I'd not have ended up with an Alfa in the first place... Admittedly I may have still made it into the 159 but it would have been harder to convince on the reality v lies of reliability/cost etc.

The big difference is at the back. The XE has a short tail a bit like a 156.

156 pre-facelift for the win.

Citroen CX and the SEL are lovely too, but the 156 remains exquisite.

(what does WCOC stand for please?)

World cup of cars, although [pedant mode] it should have been called world cup of saloons [/pedant mode].

I suspect that if the 156 was one entry for pre and post facelift, it would run away with this. I'd also wager that it's the car that brought more of us to Alfa Romeo than any other in the last 20 years or so.

On the increasingly rare occasions I see one I still get this weird mix of pride and pleasure thinking "I had one of those".

For me it will always be special.

Garage
I remember when a good mate of mine, who never expressed any interest in cars, came over and just gawped at my first 156. it was the front door handles. He said they were works of art. I couldn't tell you, right now, what handles are on the HR-T, but I can recall every detail of the 156's.

Probably because of the times I had to lubricate them.

This is a tough group as was said earlier though I struggle to see how the XE even made the cut. It's not ugly but it's OK at best.
I proposed the Lincoln but don't think it stacks up against the competition.
Increasingly the avant-garde Citroen draws me to it but is it beautiful or just unusual?
The M5 has a brutish charm but doesn't meet the brief either.

Instinctively, I wanted to vote 156 because it is STILL a gorgeous design but I held back from voting, accusing myself of rose-tinted Alfa bias then I saw your comment and completely agreed. I saw the design drawings that were released to the motoring press a year or two in advance of its launch and I have never wanted a new car so much as I did when that came out. It is a genuine pageant beauty queen despite its flaws and as you say it had a large say in why so many of us were drawn to modern Alfa ownership.
