What's your daily commute?

I was pondering the other day that I'm doing a more regular trip to our Manchester office, and was chatting to folk over there about their commute.

Anyway, what's your journey distance, mode of transport, time taken, and general feeling about the commute?

Poll is distance...

I'm very fortunate. Sometimes I can wfh. Usually I travel about 3 miles to work. Every other week or so I make a train journey to Manchester.

I used to commute 28 miles round the m25 from Kent to Essex. Sometimes there'd be a crash so I'd be delayed. Now I don't have to worry about a potential ETA of 11.30 at night a couple of times a year.

1.5 in the car. Infrequent use of bike or shanks’ pony.

I still manage to find one or two people who should be dragged from their car, have their arm ripped off and be beaten to death with the soggy end, even doing less than 3 miles a day.

It was mid-30's each way up to 18mths ago when we moved head office to Manchester Airport, so it's about 25m EW now.

It's not so much the distance as the time. No real option to avoid the M60 for me to either site but at least now it's more like an hour/1.15 most days compared to 1.40/2.00 before.

Just finished a job which was mostly work from home. Hated it. Almost as bad as retirement. No chats in the office, no team to work with, no after work drinks, no routine etc etc.

As of Monday Feb 18th I am working back in the centre of London so am back to a 45-50 minute commute 5 days per week.

5 minute drive to station, 25 minute train into town, 15-20 minutes walk/tube (weather dependent) to office.

Very much looking forward to regime, structure, community, talking/discussion, HUMAN INTERACTION!!!

(I will probably hate it after a couple of years - but I've reached the age/career point now where I can choose to stay/go/whatever anyway when I've had enough)

Mine's roughly a 10 mile round trip to the nearest station, down some very twisty country roads, followed by a suicidal dash out onto a busy dual carriageway just after the crest of a hill and a speed camera, followed by a variable-length traffic jam roughly 1/2 mile down the road. So a high performance car with 0-60 under 8 seconds, good handling and brakes is a must, which I guess makes me very lucky - I simply can't drive a normal car if I want to make it into work in one piece...

Just shy of 20mi each way.. Usually about 30 minutes. Fortunate enough to avoid motorways and city driving.

About 30 yards bedroom to kitchen.

Never much of a delay, never come across an accident or police incident but the postman sometimes delays my appointment with the kettle.

That aside I do commute 3 miles to my babysitters job on Fridays through town, but I cheat and cut through the pedestrian precinct to avoid the worst set of lights.

If I go to Leeds to babysit it’s a 2 hour journey home to travel 22 miles if I get the timing wrong, that makes me grumpy.

Mine involves either taking younger child to work or picking him up. Usually an hour of traffic misery and a fiver to park.

A 15-20 minute 11 mile blast down the A59 to Skipton and back every day, enough to get the oil and coolant up to temp and the GTA returns 28mpg on that which helps avoid bankruptcy. Lucky really...

Heh, lucky you, with my current Subaru Legacy GTB I get around 15mpg, and it needs to run on expensive 99RON
(otoh it is considerably faster than my gta used to be, and it is very difficult not to use the performance)

Mine is 13 miles each way. The roads are mostly B roads, but unfortunately lots of traffic during peak times.

Other. The great thing about not having to work is that you don't have to travel to work; however, when I did, ten miles each way through the Peak District was a good way to start & end the day.

It's a 98 model so 2.0 DOHC twinturbo boxer, remapped to around 300bhp.

Wonder if you could get the 2.0 turbo Busso to those sort of power levels?

Used to commute 30 miles from the Kent/London border into Surrey, about 45 minutes. Enjoyed the drive, being on my own, listening to music, or Radio 4 or whatever. Some parts of the route were good stretches of road for car-flinging when I was in the mood.

Now, like Verbout, I travel from bedroom to kitchen. I'm not a member of the aristocracy like Verbout, so my journey is only thirty feet to his thirty yards.

This is why I go to the office 4 days a week, because not having human interaction is miserable.
If I go in a car, it's a 28 mile drive but I haven't got a car, so it's 15 minutes walk to Brighton train station, then around an hour to Horsham, then another 15 minutes walk to the office - just under 90 minutes door to door.

On Fridays, I have enough of train nonsense and work from home.

Approx 15 miles each way and most of the time I'll be in the Spider, with a stupidly beatific grin on my face.

5 days of the week it's a 17 mile trip each way. A mixture of country roads A roads and then hit the traffic near Derby and the wonderful A52 road improvements. (originally due to finish this month, now guestimated to be completed summer 2020 )

Mine is currently under a mile (and has been since August 2006), so I walk to the office enjoying the route through the park.

This is however is going to end when we relocate offices making it a 22 mile round trip
