***** fight.. Mondeo or 3-series

I've recently noticed LOADS of BMW 3-series.

It seems to have become the "family sized saloon" of choice. It even outnumbers the former family favourite (pre-Blair) Ford Mondeo though I dunno the respective registration figures.

It got me wondering... which one would I have, if I was offered a straight choice between one or the other (e.g. as a company car)?

For the purposes of "***** Fight" please ignore likely cost difference, spec's, running costs, engine choices etc. Imagine that you'll get a mid to high spec' one of either (but not the M3!) completely at random and that you must then drive around in it for a year.

Which one would you choose?

Re: ***** fight.. Mondeo or 3-series

Both are common. The BMW because it's a great car, the ford because due to availability of parts and ease of ownership fords have always been popular in Britain.

I'd take the quality car over the cheap option anyday of the week.

Mid-high spec?

No contest. BMW. A 330 would be very acceptable for a year.

I would take the BMW - i had a Mondeo it was great, fast, handled really well, and was very comfortable i wish it was badged differently and it would have been great.

Re: ***** fight.. Mondeo or 3-series

I get a different hire car each week, and unfortunately get a fair share of Mondeos, they are without doubt the worst car I get, I've had better handling from a row boat.
It would have to be the sales reps idol for me too.

Mrs AF has got an '05 Mondeo Ghia auto. Its got as many toys in it that you could usefully use and everyone that gets in it says that didn't realise Mondeos could be so nice. There's a massive difference between the base Zetec model and a Ghia X.

Really liked the new Mondeo.

Don't do badge snobbery so wouldn't reject it on account of the badge alone (unless it was a BMW)

Ignoring cost differences, running costs etc I'd have the Beemer and put it sideways everywhere I could

Out of the 2 the Ford - if you're talking about the 2ltr. Most tests I've read say its the better car. But in truth I wouldn't buy either

Re: ***** fight.. Mondeo or 3-series

i'm quite a ford-o-phile, their cars might not be the best looking things out there but they're well screwed together and anything from a ka through a focus to a mondeo is an absolute hoot to drive, but a mid range mondeo or a mid rage 3-series???? sorry, no contest. i know there's a lot of BM haters on AO (i'm not one of them btw) but you can't argue that they don't make incredibly accomplished cars with cracking engines. munich minicab for me every time i'm afraid.

Re: ***** fight.. Mondeo or 3-series

I'd rather eat worms whilst having needles poked in my eyes than own a Ford of any description.

Oddly my hatred of the brand is partly due to the fact that Ford sell their cars as though they are as good as be ems and guillible idiots buy them and drive them as such...Which is the other reason I hate them, the owners tend to be ignorant mannerless idiots with no indicators who think their car is the 8ollox

Be ems are actually better cars than their owners know and unfortunatly tend to be bought for the badge, but are much better cars...Only lacking the soul of an Italian car

Bright Yella Fiat Stilo 3dr 1.9 jasons tractor diesel Cruise, dz climate, n leather, so many toys now with 17" claws
Sadly the STILO is for sale, I've now got a Renault Master beavertail
I pop in here to have a look now and again-but don't know what to say
Written off in the prime of life...My Bella.

Cheers for that!

I'm now going to take myself off to charm school. There, I hope my tendency to ignorance and lack of manners will be put right. I can then enjoy a full and frank exchange of views with the next person who asserts that my choice of car is an indicator of my inner self.

It appears that from your signature you are an Alfa man.
My comments are made at the masses who are easier to predict than any one person (Quote from Arthur Conan Doyle) As with BMW's it is the "typical" owner that is to be detested, not the vehicle.
Anyone who is as vitriolic as my rant, also has need of charm school...
But when I lived in the midlands, the way Sierra's and more typically Orions wre driven through a congested ring road made me mad.
9/10 times the guy who whizzed up the wrong lane and then pushed in was a Ford driver. Simple fact - however I will concede that not every Ford driver drives like that.....

Re: ***** fight.. Mondeo or 3-series

Sometimes when you choose a car carefully to suit your needs the car more or less chooses itself. This was the case with our Ford. Look for an automatic, diesel, well equipped 5 door hatchback and there are few choices available, BMW and Alfa are not among them.

PS I have not noticed any fundamental character changes in my wife since she changed from a Mercedes to a Ford.

Aye! That's what I was thinking... but Uncle Henry seems to be getting a kicking from the closet-Beemistas!
