Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Has anyone any views on using the sticky boots.
Gazza82 says not that good .Zuluferret says real good things.(Extracts from a search on a different thread).

Read my Backposts! If you have little patience, and cannot work with scrupulous cleanliness, and attention to detail, forget it! For me, they have been 100% successful, come and view my results if you want: The oldest is still going strong on my daughters Fiesta, five years on. Currently have one fitted to our run about, which works fine.Voted.

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Thank you zulu. I knew that you were keen on them and I knew what your reply was before you voted and unles there is some divine intervention I know Gazza's answer too..

Just wondered if the silent majority had any views too.
Forgot to add Lawyers and politicians are exempt form voting in this poll..We need an accurate poll.
Mine has just arrived...A neat piece of kit.
Not sure if it will do the 166 but it was well worth the gamble.
Sneaky metal bands too. Curiosity kiled the cat and I have already stuck the two metal bands.
Problem solved tho. just cut the band and pushed it through .Enough left to do the trick...So if you go for 1 dont muck about with the metal bands until you have placed it around the driveshaft.

I believe there are several maunufacturers of these.QH (Quinten Hazell) and Bailcast....I have got the Bailcast.

Yup the only way they work is if you have the two qualities that ZF states. Unfortunately I do not have these and I wont use them again

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Apologies for my ignorance guys but what are we talking about ? Are these gaitors that can be put on without dismantling the assy ?

Not a facetious post but a genuine question.

Yep. Save pulling the drive shaft from the hub.

I tried them once but I wouldn't be the neatest of guys when messing with greasy bits and it didnt stick properly.

Cheers, thanks for that. Seems like a good idea on the face of it. If I remember correctly the O/S driveshaft gaitor on the GTV is a pig to get at, maybe this is an answer ? Or is it the steering rack gaitor. Wish my mind would function at least occasionally !

Nige,When I get around to it I'll post a picture so you know what it is.

Poll not looking too good so far.I added trunk as when I did a search the most results were for getting into your boot of your car.

Other. I think they are a bodge job and I wouldn't use them.

Get some of the stretchy ones insted if it is so important not to split the CV joint.

As ZF says you must be scrupulously clean and it should be effective.

Would I use again...Definately....But only if it lasts as long as Zulus...Time will tell.

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Might be ok if you only needed an MOT so that you could sell the car..

I would go for the stretch ones, they are almost as easy. Other than having to undo the hub nut. And will probably last a lot longer.

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Totally bow to your superior automotive knowledge then Moto Tech. Eventually complete final drive failure on our runabout meant she was scrapped, with a two year old sticky boot repair intact, which made the parting of her all the more aggravating. Well, the boot kit did cost the huge sum of fifteen quid, can you blame me for being a little choked, after that clinical repair I effected?

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

well in my experience they just dont stick very well especialy with alfa driveshafts being rather large, gtv 145 etc are easy to just pull the outside end of the drive shaft off but 156 not so easy with the double wishbone. I would say doing one of those sticky boots with the drive shaft on say a 156 is virtualy impossible any with the lack of room so if you have one or both end of the drive shafts off why not just put a stretchy boot on?

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Whatever? Although someone mentioned the flexible type was not as durable as the tough sticky boot variety. Good results for me, so the choice is indeed personally yours.:

Absolutely mate at the end of the day if you can make them work then great, but from a professional stand point id never use them, a customer pays for a proper cv boot thats what he gets, some garages will charge you for a proper one and bung a split boot on. Also most people wouldnt have the patience to fit a splitty

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

I apologise in advance but because of my previous experience with sticky boots I have developed a fetish.....I now have more sticky boots than Imelda Marcos standing on molten Wrigleys with her thousands of boots on.I have started a major collection and now when I open the cupboard they all fal out on me....I know you either love them or hate them BUT is this becoming an unhealthy obsession.

I am now puting CV boots over good boots so that when they inner ones fail the new ones will hold the grease in and it'll still pass an mot....Belt and braces ye ken.

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Not only has this wee kit done the cv boot BUT the air inlet hose from the air filter to the throttle housing burst when I was taking it off to do the cylinder head gasket on the Bravo and I remembered there was some supeglue left over....I've just used it to repair the intake hose.

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

Well doing pomeo's spring for her mot and cv outer boot I encountered extreme difficulty getting seized bolts out .I have ordinary boots for when I stripped it down BUT due to problem after problem I am leaving it till the better weather and doing both boots....May wait till either one goes again.

Come on Pomeo, can hardly remember what I did yesterday never mind 9 months ago.

I probably did but have no recollection what the results were ! Google searches can be a laugh, if you have the patience. Was doing some research a while ago about the moons of Jupiter, can you guess the amount of pics I got of peoples bare bums in all types of situations ? Not quite what I had in mind !

I also love some of the spell checker suggestions. When I put my ex's name in it comes up with " Despot. " Actually not a bad suggestion !!!

Re: Poll on CV sticky boot gaitors.

They kept the old Pug going and my daughters Fiesta, right to the end. The Pugs diff bearing finally gave out, and her Fiesta got bumped and written off!: But the sticky boots were still working. :
