Cambelt Roulette

Simple game.

Life and death on a turn of a cog.

Dare you play Cambelt Roulette?

Just how many miles will you or have you deliberately run that motor without changing the belt?

Let's spin the chamber and squeeze the trigger.

Re: Cambelt Roulette

I voted 46-55k for my V6 - thats about as long as I'll leave it unless I'm considering a 3.7 conversion in which case I'll just leave it till it pops as the valves aren't needed anyway

Re: Cambelt Roulette

Depends on how much the crankshaft gear rips the guts out of the valve train setup! Don't drive with a lead foot, easy on that loud pedal, she'll love being caressed rather than thrashed! Dispels my post on the knackers yard, glue factory stuff a bit! Well, it's me again ain't it?

Re: Cambelt Roulette

For my Fiat 60,000 miles.
Fiat specify 72,000 mile changes but they don't have a reputation for belts failing early.

Re: Cambelt Roulette

I would not go past 36,000 miles...my belts did not last even that before I had to change them recently...they were starting to make funny noises......

Your survey should have 36,000 miles no more

Re: Cambelt Roulette

Before I bought my 156 TS Symonh200 (Who owned it last!) had it done at 90K miles September last year.

There's no way I'll be doing another 30,000 miles in the next few years so I'll have to do mine via age instead, so that's 3 years I believe.

Meaning I won't have to do mine now until September 2010.

I hope so mate anyway as it seems like a great car, I'm planning on getting wed next year anyway so have no plans to be getting rid any time soon.

I certainly hope to see it til its next cambelt change anyway.

Bought my car at 3.5 years old and 19K miles. Got the dealer to change the belts before I picked it up.

Re: Cambelt Roulette

I always try and aim for changes around the 30k mark. Just changed the belts in the 33 a couple of weeks ago and they only had 12k on them, but they had been in there for 8 years

Re: Cambelt Roulette

Before the belt was changed on my Fiat last week it had done 72,000 miles and been on there for 11 years. It was starting to crack badly and the garage reckoned it was a lucky escape...
The Poly Vee belts also had sections missing and the aircon fixed tensioner had a large chunk out of it.

I would never have left the job that long though thats why I got it changed straight away.

I had the belts and tensioners replaced on my JTS when the car was 3 years old and had covered 22,000 miles.

Its ok, Its not your fault, its all the previous owners and especially the one who told you it had been done...

The AA who did your service are also partly to blame for not spotting it..
I am changing the oil soon on it in case they didn't change the filter, as it is a right ***** to get at apparently, and I don't want to risk it not having been done.

So lets just say I wouldn't recommend AA service centres if you value your cars well being..

Yeah, the AA were a bit crap to be honest. They didn't change the fuel filter, just told me it could do with a new one,

So I bought one myself and had one of the guys at work fit it over lunch time for me.

At least I knew that had been done.

£153 for a service where I didn't trust all had been done was a bit annoying, My dad said they were very good, but clearly he wasn't right.

I'll be taking my 156 to Duncan at Alfanet if I need any work, servicing etc.

Oh, Simon, I received the stereo surround this morning thanks mate,

Re: Cambelt Roulette

No problemo, I got my log book yesterday as well.
I found the cause of the clonking on the front suspension on the Fiat by the way. One of the anti roll bar drop link bushed had deteriorated allowing movement.
I ordered 1 kit for each side at the grand total of £6 + VAT each.

Re: Cambelt Roulette

I had the cambelt on the GTV done earlier this year after about 24,000 miles - however, that was because a valve burnt out

Re: Cambelt Roulette

Mine will be due for replacement at three years so 2009 for me.

Only doing about 2,000 miles a year currently so mileage is not an issue. Back to Royston and The Alfa Workshop then.

Anyway I won't risk any big repair bills by expecting it to last beyond three years.
