WCOC Match 15

Alfa 156 v Jensen Interceptor

I love both of these. I remember the first time I saw a Jensen. I wasn't very old, we were going on holiday, and it was stopped at the services. I vaguely remember my dad's car being a Triumph 1300 (the FWD one) to give you an idea of how long ago that was. I remember the launch of the 156 and thinking it was the best looking 4-door I'd ever seen, never thinking i'd own one. Because I owned one, I have particular affection for it, so it wins, narrowly.

Auto Express - six issues for a quid. Offer must end soon (and then immediately start up again).

This is likened to judging who is the better looking of Susan Boyle and Anne Widdecombe

As the 156 pictured is now of the GTA flavour, that wins

I don't want to vote for the 156 because I don't think it's a good looking car but then neither is the Jensen...

As Gaz says the GTA tips it in the 156's favour, just

6.3 or 7.2 litres and around 280hp, or 3.2 and 250?

..or a 3 speed auto vs a six speed manual?

Easy.

I love the Jensen. As a small boy when they were around in the late sixties and early seventies, this car seemed to exemplify the future, which in those days still seemed positive and optimistic; sic-fi would save the world and we were all watching Tomorrow's World while waiting for TOTP and our Jet Packs to arrive.

Obviously, I vote for the 156 though

Office Chair.

I remember sat in the library staring into endless car books. I did not often go to the library. Anyway Opel Rekord, Jensen Interceptor and Ford Capri all shouted at me. I so wanted a Jensen and today I could have one but but there are so many other cars... a 156 is not such a car.
Whilst the 156 was a new direction (and pretty one) for Alfa it won't ever compare to a childhood hero such as the Interceptor.
On any other forum I believe the Jensen would walk all over the 156.
I would not own a 156 (the later face lift was soo much nicer than this odd fronted version), but would a 147 or GT (I did) and a 159 (I did) because of those later times for Alfa the 156 is my least favourite. I might take one with a Busso, though I'd have to have my arm properly twisted and a knife at my throat .
I put up with squeaking GT's and even 159's but not ever in a 156.

You are all wrong here and obviously don't know the first thing about fantastic cars tch tch tch. 156 indeed on an Alfa forum

I'm not going anywhere, I'm just going.
Statements above are all my own opinion and not fact.

I disagree with all of what you have said

The Phase 3 is the "odd fronted" version. Its nose is too long, like a tapir.
Still better looking than most other cars around, but not better looking than a Phase 2.

While I didn't exactly "pan" the 156 last round I wasn't for putting it through. But I'm in a capricious mood. The GTA looks more right than a cooking version on its last dose of Kurust and it is genuinely a lovely, clean design.

Rather like Malc, I've lusted after a big burbly V8 Interceptor since seeing a few as a kid. Trust me, they stood out in Salford at the time! But hard as I try to convince myself, it isn't really that beautiful. It has "something" attractive about its odd shape but in a head-to-head the 156 just about wins on points.

Exactly. The Interceptor is a very attractive motor, but it does have a whiff of the "stodgy old tweed-wearing codger" of a look about it. The proportions aren't quite right, a bit too long in the middle section, perhaps?

Indeed. Cars with 6-speed boxes are much better looking than automatics.

Well done, I was leaning toward the Jensen, but
the sight of that naked Busso clinches it for me!

I kind of have yes, and I like the Jensen . The correct technical term for my condition is 'Controlled Ocular Hypertension'. I don't have any field of vision loss.
