The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

I've been thinking of late: I wonder how many people slope into their Alfa showroom with the intention of buying a Brera .......

and end up with a GT!

So, is the Brera the best thing to have happened to the GT?

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

I went into the showroon last year with the intention of trading my GT in for a Brera and came out deciding to keep the GT another couple of years. It couldn't fit in the front, the nipper got stuck in the back and it felt slower - although I have to admit the Brera is a better built and more modern car. In fact I will probably trade my GT in for another one - just as they are phasing them out.

Mis-read the question so discount my "No" and swap it for a yes - I too cannot get in one!

Voted maybe as we both went with the intention of buying one and Clare ended up with the GT (more practical and better engine) and me with the 159Ti (better seats and standard equipment).

The only problem that I can see is that it highlights the build quality difference of thenew generation of Alfa's.

In the looks department the Brera wins hands down. I've never been a great fan of the GT. Looks very ordinary from the rear.(ducks!)

As i am slightly vertically challenged i don't think i'd have trouble getting in one!!

Very subjective that one slipperman - Brera has a nicer back end, GT looks better from the side and I can't decide which has a nicer front - a draw.

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

I voted maybe. Brera is by far the better looking/more striking, but I prefer the driving characteristics of the GT myself.

I do think they are named wrong though, the Brera is a pure GT (as in tourer) type of car, whereas the actual GT is a bit more of a sports car (like the GTV was)..

I voted no, not sure why,

Personally I prefer the GT, but it's all down to personal tastes and all that.

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

I think what I'm trying to say is that the Brera's shortcomings (and by that I don't mean her looks which are stunning) mean that folk take a wander round the showroom, spot another perhaps more practical stunning bella and buy it instead.

Good for the GT, good for Alfa.

I like to think of it as "well if you don't fancy me, have you seen my big sister over there?

I voted maybe, as perhaps some go in to buy a GT and end up with a Brera

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

They are two totally different cars. There are anumber of things that have helped sales of the GT:

The 159, Brera and Spider getting people into the showrooms.
The Blackline model.
Used prices holding up well.

It could have been even better if Alfa hadn't seriously dropped the ball getting the Q2 out to customers.

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

I'd never really thought about it to be honest! but if I were spending my own money I think I might buy the.............GT..........no the Brera.........the GT........the Brera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interestingly when I was looking at changing my 147 I would have loved to have had the opportunity to buy a GT for the money I had. But if a Brera had been available too then I would have had the Brera. I agree that the GT looks better even now but after owning a 159 for a while I understand where the development has gone and why it is the better product.

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

Defiantly, we have sold loads of GTs to people that start out looking at Breras, the GT is so much more practical and we are offering them with up 6k off, it if fantastic value for money. If I were in the market I would buy a Q2, not that there are any about at the moment.

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

Which is faster? That my clinch it for me,

I had a bit of a play against a GT 3.2 V6 the other night, and although quick it wasn't exactly astounding. I think the Brera is supposedly a bit slower isn't it?

....But when it comes to money that GT cam belt change is gong to hurt but of course the Brera (petrol) doesnt have a cam belt so you can save yourself almost the cost of three years road tax there!!

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

Brera is the most practical car I've owned!
(Slight exaggeration for effect. )

I probably wouldn't have got another Alfa if
it didn't exist.

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

Remember guys, this isn't a poll about which is the better car or more beautiful - there are dozens of (pointless) threads on that subject. This is is about whether the Gt has benefited from folks coming in to view the Brera, finding it doesn't quite suit them (perhaps from a practicality view) and rather than go away disappointed have looked round and seen another stunner and bought it instead.

My neighbour did just that: His kids dragged him in to buy a Brera but after much hand wringing and anguish ended up with a very tasty GT Blackline.

Re: The Brera: best thing ever to happen to the GT?

Not sure about the best thing to happen to the GT, but clearly the Brera has had a positive, eye-catching, impact on the Alfa brand.

And I say that despite the car's deficiencies.

Voted maybe.

The best thing that happened to the GT was when an Alfa engineer was driving a 147 and spotted an Audi Coupe and decided to combine the two...
