Caterham or Lotus

Last week on 5th Gear they had a 'shoot-out' between a Lotus Exige S and a Caterham CSR.

The Catherham beat the Lotus in the dry by 2.5 seconds, although the hood and doors came loose. It was also on semi-slick tyres.

The Lotus was quicker in the wet, and VBH thought it was more of a car that you could use on the road.

So, which one would you buy

Personally I'd got for the Caterham, however, if the choice was an Elise SC....

Re: Caterham or Lotus

For a track toy, I'd get the Caterham. It's amazing how much difference being able to see your front wheels makes.
If I was going to get a Lotus, it'd have to be an Esprit anyway.

Re: Caterham or Lotus

Caterham for unadulterated fun and because it's one of those cars you should have had at some point.

Exige is sill great and a tad more usable ( ) IRL.

I'll take either thanks!

Caterham for me, just because of the character. It's a bit like the Jaguar or Aston question

(yeh, right. I should be so lucky )

Re: Caterham or Lotus

The Lotus for me, its a car

Caterhams are stunningly quick, but rather hard for most to take seriously as car that you would want to drive off the track at which point you may as weell go for an Atom or Radical and be done with it..

I wouldn't fancy my 2000 Km round trip to the ring in the Caterham, but it wouldn't be an issue in the Elise.

..and I haven't even mentioned the looks!

Re: Caterham or Lotus

Ideally the Caterham for the track and the Lotus for the road; but if I had to choose one I'd get the Lotus

Re: Caterham or Lotus

Looking for something quick, impractical, light, open-topped, uncomfy, noisy and a huge laugh, it would have to be the Caterham ... or a Westfield Megabusa.

The Lotus is nice but I'm a kit car fan, a lad at work has an Elise 111R and my Robin Hood that cost a quarter of what he spent gives it a good run for its money.

Re: Caterham or Lotus

My last two cars were lotus - Elan & Elise - so I am biased, plus they are slightly more usable everyday.

Tha Caterham is only a toy and for normal joe £40k is a lot for a weekend plaything

Re: Caterham or Lotus

A westfield would do me fine. My dad owned an SE about 10 years ago, although it only had around 125bhp of Tuned Crossflow engine it was bonkers... I prefer the looks to the Caterham as well, they look a bit more brick like in shape.
The Westfields are also cheaper as you are not paying for the original design rights.

A Dax Rush with a Tuned Rover V8 would be good as well though.. As would a Radical.

Re: Caterham or Lotus

A V8 is too heavy for something light like that IMO, nothing over the rear wheels and a thundering V8 engine producing bucket-loads of torque sat in the front.

Looking to replace the Robin Hood with a Westie soon. 2-lite pinto/ 1600 X-flow would be plenty for a car that light. The 2-litre EFI in the RH will eat most things off the line, a £4k car skinning a Porsche from the lights! It's got to be around the 100bhp mark but these things are so light the acceleration from stand-still is phenominal.

It would be nice to build a Westie with a motorbike engine in the future, keep it as light as possible with mountain bike 6-pot vented disc brakes and mountain bike shockers, carbon fibre panels ...
