To break or not to break....

I have acquired a black 2001 y-reg 156 sportwagon with selespeed. It has one significant problem - a horrible bearing type noise from the gearbox. It drives okay and the gear change work - might be a bit slow but I have never driven a selespeed.. Other than that it is all in decent condition for a 13 year old Alfa with 93K miles on the clock. The engine was replaced by Alfa under warranty at 32K. It has full leather as well.

It was presented for an MoT but only failed on a cracked alloy and three tyres that had badly perished inner walls.

The previous owner decided not to re-test it due to the gearbox problem and it is now mine.

I have too many Alfas to keep another one so I was going to break it. My problem is that it is a pretty decent car. Not A1 by any means but it looks respectable and the engine runs great - and the gearbox problem could be something as simple as a knackered clutch release bearing. Worst case scenario, it would need a new box.

If someone wanted a project, I would be willing to stick on my spare 147 alloys (with 4 good tyres) and run it back through the MoT. It could then be collected from Stornoway for £500 or Inverness for £580 plus the cost of six months road tax.

Or I could just break it... Decisions, decisions

If it was a manual I would be interested. But I don't think I could get on with a sele.

Your old gtv is running great BTW. Spent a wee bit more than I intended but effectively every moving part in the suspension has been overhauled. Fantastic car but I am having to take it easy as the front tyres are bald.

I have noticed that you have had your fair share of problems. Glad you are getting it sorted.

I am breaking my old 156 sportwagon and considered using the parts to convert the selespeed to manual but it would never get done!
