Winter tyres for 159 Ti

I am looking to fit a set of wheels and winter tyres to my 159 Ti. Thing is I'm looking for 17" wheels with winter tyres on them (easier to find 17" winter tyres). I've had a fairly good look on here but can't find anything that suits. I grudge buying new ones so, wheels that look alright and tyres with a good tread on them will be fine, they don't have to be "as new".

Thank you
Derek

Well Happy Derek :)

Derek, you might have a problem with putting 17 Inch alloys on your car. You have big daddy Brembo's on the front of the 159. Theirs not enough clearance to put 17 Inch alloys on alone and they will hit off the caliper. I spoke to one of the lads in Edinburgh about this and he had the same issue with one of his customers. In the end they had to get some spacers to have enough clearance away from the caliper for the alloy to turn and not hit.

I can supply these 17 Inch alloys to yourself at £696.00 Inc v.a.t

I know their not the bonniest of wheels but their cheap for a new set & their 17's which will help you to source nice cheap snow tyres.

If your intrested let me know & i'll get onto the case for finding these spacers for you & hopefully we can get you sorted out.

Cheers,

Malky

Warning

Here's where I show my ignorance of matters 159 at this stage...... what size are the wheels on the car? 19" ?
If yes..... and they're 235/40/19 then I see your dilemma That'll be around £300/corner for a winter tyre

Might be worth considering equipping the fronts only with winter tyres - unless it's a Q4.
Strikes me as being your cheapest option in the short term.

I have done this myself in the past - winter tyres on front only - when I lived in darkest snow hit Aberdeenshire. Although the difference in grip levels does tend to make the back end a wee bit 'happy' in snow and ice it will be manageable. I found this a very useful indication of where the limits are in those conditions.... if the car starts over-steering when the back end loses grip it's time to think long and hard about easing off

If fitting spacers is needed for 17" wheels to fit then logic suggests that standard Brera 18"s would probably fit OK..... in which case an ebay bargain might be had:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alfa-18-Al...item2ec2adc81b

Which might leave enough spondoolies in the bank to buy a set of winter tyres in (235 45 18?) which should be around £180/corner - still kicking the backside of a grand for wheels and tyres

On the other hand, a set of s/h 17's with spacers and new winter tyres might come in considerably cheaper than that. Ebay is your friend again..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-x-Alfa-R...item2ec2ac187b they should fit (with spacers) and tyres should be around £130 a corner.

Thinking about it.... I know a fellow AO member in Merseyside who had a set of 17" 159 wheels up for grabs cheap off his 159 2.4, I'll drop him a line and see if he still has them up for grabs.

I took some time to build up a set of "winter wheels", picking up 19" Ti alloys singly or in pairs (two came from this forum). If you are patient and have time, you can get used ones for £120 - £140 a pop. Failing that, there is Veloces at £250 a go.

As to the tyres - Falken do a set at £200 a corner, rather than the £320 that Pirelli want. Checking online reviews for the Falkens suggested good feedback (mainly from BMW drivers desperately needing grip at the back...), so ) I have gone for them.

I thought about going the 17" or 18" route, but I was worried that the brakes would not fit on the 17", and didn't want separate size wheels - if I smash an alloy, then I can put on one of the winter alloy for the cost of a tyre swap, then have time to get the replacement at the right price....

I had Pirelli Sottozero's fitted to just my front 19"s when I had the 159 SW. They were great and made a world of difference on snow and ice.

Just remembered that Chick still has them stored for me at CM garage, East Kilbride. Completely forgot to offer them when I got rid of my other bits!

You're welcome to them if you like? Think there's around 5mm on them and are in great nick. They'll at least tide you over until a long term solution is found

Lick :)

Bearing in mind INS147 these are only starting bids and they could shoot up in price

I can do a set of brand new 18" Alloys for £522.00 Inc v.a.t direct from Alfa Romeo.

24 month warrenty..... ???

18INCH.jpg

These are for the giulietta... they might clear the caliper but im not sure..they might also need spacers.

Thanks for that, I wasn't entirely sure how ebay worked My observation was intended to demonstrate that if a good set of second hand wheels can be found for the right price then it's not too daunting a purchase.

There's no doubting those are great prices for a set of new wheels
If I needed them, I'd be on the 'phone tomorrow with the wife's credit card numbers

Even at £696 (or £522) for four wheels the cost of tyres on top is going to be around the £500 mark so that's still over a grand which is undeniably a chunk of cash to most mortals just before the festive season - or at any time, for that matter.

A set of s/h alloys (say for £250) plus the cost of tyres is a lot more palatable at around £750, especially for winter use. Get the right auction, could be a lot cheaper.

@ benzinahead: The offer of those 19" winter tyres seems too good to pass up.......
The 159 17" Lusso (?) wheels a friend of mine has are indeed still available (cheap, with Michelin non-winter tyres) but are in Merseyside.

All,
Thank you each and every one of you for your feedback, I'm just back from a looooooong weekend in Berlin, so will read through your posts and make a call based on those. I really appreciate your help, it may not be as much of a struggle as I thought it was going to be.
Thanks again and will post my desired choice of direction before the sna ploos are needed!!

Thankyou Veloces, I can potentially get my hands on two 19" tyres (as you can see below), but I would prefer a full set, so I will certainly give you a shout for the remaining two. Can I ask what make of tyre they are?
Thank you

Just seen this - yep, they're mine!

I'll check with the garage first as soon as I can to double check their condition etc as they must have been there for over a year! I reckon Chick's probably forgotten as well!

I can confirm they are 2x Pirelli Sottozero's and will be the right size to clear calipers, 235/45/19 from what I remember? I'll measure tread as well once located and post back details.

TBH I don't know what to ask for as I obviously have no need for them but new ones are expensive and Chick did me a favour storing them for me. Would 40 be reasonable? 20 for me, 20 for Chick and you get a bargain (bearing in mind they're in East Kilbride)?

Hi Stuart, once you can confirm the condition, that price seems very fair indeed, I'll get them fitted on the way back up the road to Aberdeen perhaps. I'm down that neck of the woods reasonably often.
Thanks again

The GTA was joy last night on the way home from Bond, the odd flicker of TC as I crossed lanes to passed stuck or crawling BMWs.

Skyfall is great too

Hi Derek,

I managed to pop down and see Chick today. He'd forgotten as well about the tyres but dug them out for me to check. We both agreed they're in very good condition with approx. 4mm of even tread around both tyres so would do for a while as winter tyres. You could always switch them to the rear later if you even got hold of a new pair for the front.

They are indeed Pirelli Sottozero 235/40/19 with 96W load/speed rating (I've attached a couple of pics for you)

I told Chick you might call or just turn up for them but at least he's aware. Just give him the £40 if you're happy as I'm in for a service in a couple of weeks.

If its any help, I had toyed with a set of 19" Ti wheels for the Giulietta, but chickened out. They were at Mitchell Vehicle Dismantling - can't remember how much they wanted though . . . . . Worth a look.

Just to let you know I have managed to reserve the 2 winter tyres from Ultraviola, I'll be there tomorrow morning to collect and pay. Thank you for your help with this, you've saved me a pretty penny.
