Drunk The 4th Annual Tour of Scotland 4th-6th of May 2013

Hi folks,

Next years run will be on the weekend of 4th to 6th May (May Day weekend) and I'm looking for some help with finding a nice hotel in the Dumfries & Galloway area. I've just heard back from The Fernhill Hotel in Portpatrick, they would be delighted to have us, only problem is that they are not prepared to budge from £90 per head per night for Dinner/Bed/Breakfast

We've been roughly around £55 per head/night in previous years, and I feel £90 is way too much (especially as there are no pool/spa facilities)

Numbers were well down for this years run for various reasons. It's as simple as this though, the more of you who commit to it early on, the more clout I have with negotiating prices down.

So, you all know when it will be. You know the general area we will be touring. You know I'll get the costs down to around (if not under) £60 per head/night. You know you'll have a good time!

So what is there to think about? Who's all up for some early summer fun in the sun next year?

You can declare your interest here 1st until I put up the official RSVP thread.

I think I might be allowed to attend next year. We skipped it this year in favour of NAD.

You might try the North West Castle in Stranraer. They are a sister hotel to the Fernhill, but we've always had good deals there. They have a pool. Good food, bit old fashioned though! There's also the Cally Pally at Gatehouse and Kirroughtree at Newton Stewart (also part of the same group - McMillan)

The Golf Hotel at Powfoot (just down the road from me!) has just been done up. No pool though - they did open a spa, but I don't know what happened to it!

I don't know it, but the Barons Craig Hotel at Rockcliffe is being done up and is closed, supposedly reopening at Easter next year. Again, no pool.

The Friar's Carse is meant to be nice - again haven't been. The Urr Valley at Castle Douglas (CD is a nice town to wander round)

Possibly a best bet would be the Cairndale in Dumfries. It's one of the better hotels in the region and has a pool/gym. There's also the Aston Hotel - lovely hotel, fab setting in the town, but no pool.

It really depends if you want to be close to the coast (little B&Bs mostly) or in a town (bigger hotels, more facilities)

You can count on Me and Sheona. Try the Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright. Cally Palce in Gatehouse would be very good but I suspect it may be expensive. I'll have a think about other possibilities.

I will contact The Cairndale tomorrow! It looks good. Last time I stayed in the North West Castle in Stranraer was when I got married to my late wife in 2002. Alright hotel as I recall, but I think I'll give it a miss.
I'll check out some of your suggestions though Julie. We could all stay with you if you like!!!!
Will check out your one too Fraser.

Cairndale looking favourite just now, Gallery visit as well Julie?

Great response so far though.........

I'm going to do my damnedest to be there. Was gutted at having to miss this year's.
If all else fails, there's a static caravan neafr Gatehouse that I know of, we can all bring our sleepingbags and crash on the floor

Pretty sure Gail and I will make it next year, it will be a good opportunity for some brownie points as I'm away on a boys golf holiday the week before.

I often get a brilliant deal from Hotel Connexions (spelt like that) , they have a great website but you usually get even better deals if you phone them up (01786 825407).

So far I make that

Louise and myself
Richard (MiToOwner) +1?
Richard & Maria
Carol & Mike
Fraser & Sheona
Amy & Andy
David & Jennifer
Stu & Pauline
Harry & Gail
Frank & Kirstine

I make that 10 so far, we can probably add
Andy & Liz
Paul & his loon Ryan
Graeme & Jo
Darren & Julia from this years run

Do you reckon we can get another 6 cars/couples to commit to make it 20 rooms?
That kind of amount should generate a slightly better room rate. I would ideally like to get our accommodation booked no later than end of September.

We could also consider B&B's and go to a restaurant each night, happy to listen to all/any suggestions.

Cheers
G

Stick a linky in the English lounges G. These events are beginning to be a bit of a ledge. now . Also, get Gaz and Steve to annoy their lot (more than usual!!) I'm sure we can get more.....

Word from our correspondent in Dumfries and Galloway is that the 'Murry Arms' in Gatehouse of Fleet is under new management and may be up for trying to impress

He also mentioned a kinda 'Best Western' place, but I figured chains would be a dead loss when it comes to negotiating prices.

Not necessarily, they're used to it with corporations.

With only 12 rooms it may prove to small for next years run, although, B&B for any overspill means we could almost guarantee the whole place to ourselves I'll contact "our D&G correspondent" and the Hotel.
