Who's got a spider I can take for a drive?

Hi folks,
I'm going to change my car soon and I really fancy a new style (939 brera based) spider. There's precious few if any for sale up here and I'd like to take one for a spin before I go looking further afield.

Can anyone help?

Have a look and see if Perth have anything in stock mate. Neil may be able to give an extended test drive if they had something.

I'm keeping my eyes posted on the sites of the (what passes for) local dealers in Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. As well as checking online too.

I'm in no great rush....but I'd like to have something by spring.

Nothing at all in Scotland according to Auto Trader

I can't think of anyone up here with a Spider, and we only have Tom, Robert and Simon among the "regulars" who have Brera's. The other Leslie ( who will probably be coming to the weekender) still has her black beauty, but she is away down south now.

Good luck with the search, it may mean a journey down south though to find the right car.

After a chat with the folks at western, they can swap one of their own cars and bring up a spider from another dealer. However this means I don't get to test drive it. I can see a trip over the border coming!

So..next question.....
2.2 petrol or 2.4 diesel?

I think you'll find that the GTV 3.2 is the fastest production Alfa ever after the 8C's. Just saying!

In all seriousness though, they are all ok motors. What do you want, performance, fuel economy, noise?????

it is bad enough having a diesel in a coupe like the GT or Brera but in a soft top like the Spider is a no no in my book.

The 2.4 diseasel sounds and goes quite well though Alex. My own preference is obviously for petrol as that is just the way I am.
Roberts Brera S 2.2 sounds amazing, but it's had a little "work" done to help it's breathing. You can't beat the sound of a V6 though, even if it is an Aussie Holden engine really.

My own choice would be for petrol first, although not the ultra thirsty 3.2. This car will see a lot of use, so its not really an option.

From what I've read of the spec the spider's diesel engine is excellent with a higher top speed and faster acceleration, and it's more economic and efficient than the petrol.

Those spec's shouldn't be ignored, but it's about getting there in style, not just head first flat out.

The 2.4 has a very nice sound to it and is probably the one to go for really. I've only tried that engine in a 159. It pulled like a train, with a very nice Ur Quattro-like burble soundtrack!

as much as I prefer petrol, I have to admit that a diesel may enter the fleet as my next daily driver.
possibly a late GT 1.9 or Brera 2.4 depending on funds come the time.

Definitely the 2.2, it is much lighter which helps the handling and as Dinomito says it can be made to sound superb (and a bit quicker) with only minor tweaking which is a big plus in a convertible where the engine noise is a lot more noticeable.
I work in Aberdeen so if you fancy a run in my 2.2 S drop me a pm and we can meet up, it will at least give you an idea of the sound and performance of a 2.2.

You need to be aware that if u go for the diesel then you may end up with EGR & DPF problems.

The diesel is ok if your doing motorway mileage as the dpf can regen(doing over 2.5k revs for a constant 20mins) but if your driving the car around aberdeenshire you will have problems.

My 2.4 has suffered both EGR & DPF failure in the first 5000 miles of ownership. I thought driving 50 miles a day on open roads into Dyce would be fine but alas no. Suffered 2 breakdowns.

So if you decide on a 2.4 then you would be best looking for one that has had a remap with the DPF removed & EGR blocked.

I eventually had the work done by Angel Tuning & now my car is a real pleasure to drive with no worries about any future breakdowns.

Could take u out in mine but it's been remapped so quicker than std.

That's good to know...sounds like I'd be doing very similar mileage patterns to you. Despite earlier comments on softtops and diesel engines I thought this might have been a sensible option for driving in an out of Aberdeen. Guess thats maybe not the case.

Just to balance the views,I own a 2.4 Spider on 5.5kmiles and have not suffered any DPF or EGR problems so far and my mileage is almost all short stuff.Not saying it won't happen just that so far its been fine !! Also I do like the soundtrack.....

Thanks to everyone who's given me their thoughts and to Wowbagger for offering me a drive.
However, due to Mr Taxman and the need for a replacement family car I've had to change my plans....

So instead of buying one car we've bought two - a Guilietta and a GTV Spider instead!

All's well that ends well...
