Re: Mosley - Now Sounding Like A Complete T1t !!??

Exactly what I thought when I saw the news this morning, are they going to inspect all the cars in the pit to make sure none of them are too similar???
I can see it now...

Mosley - "McLaren have an engine in their car this year! Too much like the Ferrari. Lets dock them 100 points"

I'd agree with that decision
So, not all Max says is rubbish!

Re: Mosley - Now Sounding Like A Complete T1t !!??

No one else had Ferrari documents though. I think what he said was fine.

As for the Schumacher thing, it was said all through his career that his dominance was bad for the sport. They even changed the points scoring system to try and stop him dominating. Any sport which has one dominant force starts debate about harm it does. Imagine Man U winning title by 25 pts every year, that would damage the sport.
The only thing I think Max got wrong is that he is pre judging it a bit. Hamilton has won nothing (yet), Im sure he will in time but any debate about him dominating should wait until then!

I'll now duck for cover

It would be pretty suspicious after years of the cars not being similar in detail, for McLaren to suddenly, independently, have a eureka moment and come up with something already in the Ferrari design, wouldn't it?

I don't see a big problem in what he says - if they find anything out of the ordinary, they'll allow McLaren to race but start from negative points. It's not a job I'd like - examining the cars and deciding what's OK and what's not, but that's OK because they haven't asked me to do it.

Turning it round, if McLaren did copy something from Ferrari (I know, they're whiter-than-white, highest integrity in the pitlane, good to their dear old mum, etc. but just think the unthinkable for a moment) what would be a better punishment?

I thought one of the other teams got dragged into the argument with regards to having Ferrari info??? Sure even though they were not prosecuted, they should still be kept an eye on

I entirely agree but it seems like Max is pre-empting the fact that they will find something....almost like guilty until proven innocent. Maybe I just got it wrong, but thats what his tone suggested to me

Toyota got done a few years ago for receiving Ferrari info from 2 ex employees. They got done but not severly IIRC.

Not aware any other team got dragged into Stepneygate? McLaren did try and drag Renault down with them saying they had some evidence they had stuff but they never backed it up

Re: Mosley - Now Sounding Like A Complete T1t !!??

Two points.

1. I remember that it came out that information was going both ways and that Ferrari were getting Mclaren info.

2. It is ironic that Mosley should use Italian football as his comparitor.

Re. The Schumacher effect quote,

Is there a chance that being a bit senile, Max & Berni told the wrong Schumacher to slow down.

That would explain a lot.

1. Nope. Something the British press came up to stir things up

I remember Stepney made that allegation, but admitted he had absolutely no proof. I think he made the allegation at around the time he was trying to get a publishing deal for his autobiography....

If I've missed a story somewhere, feel free to point me at it.

But I disagree with your "a bit senile" reference.
Surely they are both extremely senile (def. detached from reality) with their announcements and asides?

I agree, that was how I read it. Max suggests they have ways to ensure any issues will be found and they will have the best Ferrari engineering personnel poring over all the details of teh McLaren design. If there is anything the Ferrari inspection team find that might be good on a red car then they'll decide if McLaren can just be penalised in advance for using it, or denied its use so Ferrari can have it.

The Schumacher analogy is way too early as someone has already said, so another example of Max's nonsense.

The thing is, if McLaren had last year's design ideas and didn't use them on the 2007 car, why would they be interested in adding them to next year's design?

1. I can't imagine it needed stirring up.

2. I'm not interested in the diving prima donnas in the foot game.

As Jamie says, these were unsubstantiated claims by Stepney;

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/moto...ne/7027318.stm

i believe the version that these two were sharing info to go off and get a job with a third party which then fell through.

Re: Mosley - Now Sounding Like A Complete T1t !!??

The reason is that by the time they got the designs, McLaren's 2007 car was already finished, whilst they were starting to work on the 2008 car, so timing wise, 2008 is the more relevant issue.

Fair enough, I guess it's all in how you interpret it.

I read it as: "If McLaren are found guilty, this is how we'll punish them"

Others seem to be reading it as "This is how we'll punish them"

I thought he was just laying out what might happen, worst case, so that if it comes to that he can't be accused of making up a punishment on the spot, presumably based on secret inside info he has on how well / badly Ferrari's pre-season testing has gone.

Re: Mosley - Now Sounding Like A Complete T1t !!??

Mosley said of Hamilton :
"It would be surprising if he didn't know something of what was going on, but I've got absolutely no evidence that he had. On that basis it would be wrong of me to suggest that he had."

But you just thought you'd mention it anyway.

The crucial bit is the paragraph before that:

"Asked if he thought Hamilton had known more about the Ferrari information being in McLaren's possession than has come out in public, Mosley said...."

So he's been asked a direct question, and he's answered it. He didn't bring Hamilton into it, the interviewer did.
