Stefan Bellof, what might have been?

What a driver!
OK so I knew about his nurburgring lap record (which still stands at 6:11) but who has seen the footage of the Monaco grand prix 84, in which he jostled his way up from 20th on the grid to 3rd by the time the race was stopped, just past half distance due to the treacherous conditions.
Its well known that Ayrton Senna in 2nd was catching Prost but the super talented Bellof was reeling both in, so who knows what would have happened if the race had run its full distance?
Or even another 10 laps?

Who knows, he might have spun off and hit the barrier.

Certainly a very gifted driver though, and one we didn't get to see the best of.

He was an exciting driver, a maximum attack type. As you rightly say, what might have been? He might have refined his driving and become formidable, or he might have reined in the 10/10ths style and been less impressive.

Sometimes a driver is fantastic in his first season, but just doesn't get any better. Mike Hawthorn and Jean Alesi spring to mind. Sadly, in the days when we lost so many drivers, there were quite a few might have beens.

There is a case for saying he was extremely gifted, the nurburgring lap record, his fearsome display at Monaco overshadowed somewhat by Senna coming of age that very same day and numerous wins in the world sportscars series.
Its also documented elsewhere that he was rumoured to be close to signing for Ferrari for the 86' season when he had his fatal crash. He could well have been on par with Senna had he not had the tragedy at Spa.
