No bonnet bulge, chrome trim, split rear lights; yes these are 2.0 'Nord' engined Alfetta GTVs, or perhaps even 1.8. And not from that period, the Nords date back to the '50s.
The Alfetta chassis was very well sorted: rear transaxle 'box, de Dion rear axle with diagonal trailing arms which pushed the driving force into the centre of the car, in-board brakes, engine mounted well back in relation to the front axle, beautiful poise. The Nord engine was as tough as old boots and took modifying very well.
Altogether they are not too far away from the 308 in pedigree.
I always felt it was Alfa's tragedy that Porsche came along with the same configuration in the 924, with a dog of an Audi truck engine in it, and kept developing it to become the sought after 944.
If only Alfa did the same.
