Chilling Best ever F1 Race

Tough one, I know but here's mine (with summary kindly provided by someone else):

Monaco Grand Prix 1985

The Monaco Grand Prix was fourth event of the 1985 World Championship. In the time between the San Marino and Monaco events the Toleman team was able to find tires by buying out Spirit’s supply of Pirelli’s, meaning that Spirit dropped out. Part of the deal for it was that Toleman agreed to a three-year sponsorship with Benetton. The team ran Teo Fabi since Eddie Cheever was unable to escape his Alfa Romeo contract.

Senna took the pole position at this years Monaco Grand Prix, followed by Mansell and Alboreto. The start of the race showed Senna taking the front followed by Mansell, Alboreto and Prost. In the middle of the field Berger’s car was hit by Tambay and Johansson when his engine failed, all three of the cars retired early due to it. On the fourteenth lap Senna’s engine failed and so Alboreto took the lead for the next five laps. Riccardo Patrese and Nelson Piquet had a big accident at Ste Devote and left oil all over the road. Alboreto eventually ran into the oil and was cast wide and lost his lead to Prost. Lauda slipped off the track and stalled his car. Alboreto also ended up picking up a puncture from the earlier wreck and had to pit for new tires. Andrea de Cesaris took his spot but he was able to come back and reclaim his position and even take second place. Prost took the victory for the Monaco Grand Prix and Alboreto was able to hold on to second followed by de Angelis.

Re: Best ever F1 Race

Well, not exactly the best race but a memorable one for me was the Monaco GP when it poured and poured, something like 4 cars finished and Panis one, 1994??? Memory is bad!

Best race I can remember is probably last Sundays!

Re: Best ever F1 Race

Best for me is possibly the one from a long time back when Gilles Villeneuve in the Ferrari had massive wheel banging grass cutting battle with Arnoux in the Renault.

Mansall and Senna towards the end of the Monaco GP, not sure which year, when Mansall had to pit and came out behind Senna but was much much faster. Senna had the widest Mclaran in history for a few laps.

But there's been so many good ones it's hard to single one out, last weekends Hungaring round was a good one as well.

Re: Best ever F1 Race

VeloceMitch has it right!
French GP 1979 at Dijon. 1.5 litre Turbos giving 1000bhp. Renault and Ferrari challenging for the Championship. Jabouille wins for Renault, but Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari) and Rene Arnoux (Renault) battle for second place throughout the latter stages. They swap places on each of the final 3 laps, bang wheels, both go off the track, and finish a cars length apart.
Find the video if you can.
Those were the days - before Bernie spoiled everything.

Those were the days. you used to be able to see the drivers working in the cockpit. now all you see is their helmets.

Last weeks race was good tho'. maybe they should always have wet races. Put sprinklers at the side of the track. much better racing.

the one where mansell faked to overtake on one side and then swerved to the other side - what a move - pure genius

I agree!
F1 used to be edge-of-seat/nail-biting entertainment at each venue.

I really enjoyed this year's Hungarian GP... The progression from full wets thru intermediates to slicks, and the inevitable drama's along the way made it a great race. It was also good to see Jenson Button finally achieve a win

However I fail to understand how in that race Michael Schumacher appears to have got away with:

1) Red Flagging due to overtaking whilst the safety-car was out.
2) Blue Flagging due to refusing to allow quicker cars to overtake.
3) Tactical Chicanery & failure to allow the quicker car to pass.... This should have been Black Flagged, and IMHO he should have been stripped of any points awarded.

Re: Best ever F1 Race

Well for now days F1 cars i have to go Häkkinen ( not because i am Finish) only man who could put Scumi man to man batlle even after allmost get killed and win.

Okay Alonso is fast but i think its more car than driver

Räikkönen would be no: 1 with out his bad (read MacLaren luck) luck.
(i hope he will race italian car next year)

Every statistic says Schumi but my heart does not agree...

And for those early days F1 i agree that they must have been more fun to watch but what can you do those days are gone.

Last race was truly fun to watch lots of overtaking and batlles...

Re: Best ever F1 Race

I agree with everything you say Mika and I do enjoy current F1....
The 2006 Hungarian GP was a great race

My complaint is that for some reason M. Schumacher is apparently being allowed to get away with extreme bad practice and flagrant violation of F1 rules.... If I were in a position of authority I would have pulled his licence and drummed him out a long time ago, as would most current and past F1 drivers.

Yes, it should have been done in '94, but I guess its too late now.

Re: Best ever F1 Race

Mansell & Senna at Monaco when I was a kid. Can't remember when (late 80's perhaps)?

Schumi / Mika had some great battles too with sooo much respect for each other. They really brought the best out in eachother (not like today's "upstarts", JV included)!!

Re: Best ever F1 Race

I`ll second Alfajack, last sunday`s was a cracker(by recent standards).I love F1 but in the last couple of years it`s been soooo boring / predictable that I tend to fall asleep on couch.(God said sunday was a day of rest) But weather/tactics/luck inc.,it was great.Lady luck (Bernie E.) always seems to take-out main players at same time,(close finish to season perhaps??),But as a Scot I was well pleased for Jenson`s 1st win, finally got the monkey off his back.Funny how sometimes whether it`s luck or the 2nd driver jinx, that drivers can go so long without a win, then they come along like buses!!Would not like to be no.2 in ferrari, too much politics, but Massa`s doing not bad as the new boy.Let`s see a good old fashioned nerve-racking close fight to the (death) finish of season.
