Alfa's presence in motorsports...

...is being kept alive in the European Touring Car Cup:

TouringCarTimes - ETCC: XFX Unicorse to enter Alfa Romeo 156 in ETC Cup

Car looks very smart The driver is only 15 years old, yet managing to perform well in the 156. May be one to keep an eye on.

It think it's great to see an Alfa still being competitive in touring cars, it's a nice reminder of the ETCC/WTCC days where the 156's were famously competitive!

Just thought i'd share

Hehe, that's the old N.Technology car James Thompson used to drive in WTCC. Nice livery

Wish I had been given a chance like that at 15 years old.........
My driving experience at that age was round the school grounds in an ex army jeep that our school had been given for the cadet force and my Dad's car around the school playing fields on sports day...

He's not the only one. Pepe Oriola was drafted in the Seat WTCC team at 15 also. Didn't make much of an impact last year, but now they're running the new 1.6 turbo's instead of the diesel he starts to emerge in the top5... provided the gremlins don't play havoc with his electronics.

I could never have imagined driving in the WTCC at that age, when i first saw that the Alfa driver above was 15, i thought it was a typo

Good on him, i think anyone who can break into international motorsports such as touring cars at that age deserves credit. If he's emerging in the top 5 now, just imagine what he could do when he has a few more years of experience under his belt!

I could go on and boast that I drove a lap on Zandvoort while I was 10yo, but that's half the truth, as the car was an Opel with an automatic gearbox and two sets of pedals. Only thing I did was steer the thing as the instructor worked the pedals on his side

Amazing how the 156 still look fantastic as a touring car even though it's been out of production for so long. Such a shame Alfa never raced the 159ti.

A lucky lad indeed............the best of luck to him

This beauty unfortunately was never fast enough to compete in the 1991 Sportscar World Championship........it was ridiculously slow in tests........I can't recall the engine, I need to do some more work on that.
Anyway, it was so slow, that the plan was shelved...........

Is that the '048 SP' or something like that? I remember reading about it a while ago, the article mentioned that it 'most likely' had a ferrari V12 with about 680 hp, but nobody seems to know for sure.

Shame it never raced

One the finest performances of the 156, as it wasn't even campaigned officially , but by N.Technology for Thommo and Olivier Tielemans.

I found this after a bit of searching..

With a group from Osella working on the project, little wonder it never raced

The Alfa Romeo 156 Touring Car is the best looking Touring Car ever imo, Alfa need to take to the tracks again we need red cars in Touring cars not just F1. I first became aware and admired Alfa when the fantastic 155 competed in the BTCC back in '94 and I have driven Alfa's ever since.

This got a 100-120 word review in Motor Sport October (50 years of the Cobra) and an image.

I can't see that happening any time soon! Fiat doesn't seem very interested in motor sport - the only real activity outside Ferrari is concentrated on Abarth, running their own championships rather than competing with other manufacturers; the UK Abarth 500 Championship died the death after two seasons of mediocre grid numbers. They are even pulling Dodge out of NASCAR at the end of this year. . .

Alfa's only hope of a return to motor sport would probably be to be sold to VW!

There's a piece on the Motor Sport magazine website by Roebuck on Achille Varzi, who I am fairly sure I've never heard of before (you'll need to register to read it):

The name 'Varzi' definitely rings a bell. Just done a quick search on Google - sounds as though he was a fairly successful Grand Prix driver, winning 33 out of 139 races he competed in, and was a rival of Nuvolari, who i'm sure we've all heard of!

The more i read about him, the more surprised i am that you don't tend to hear his name all that much! He certainly sounds like an interesting character.
