Re: The last Alfa to race at Le Mans

Alfa powered Lucchini's,ALD,DEBORA,NORMA, and one or two other prototipi,V6 engine first 12 and then 24 valve start or try and qualify to start almost every year ,up to 2000 i think,if you are doing a project check entry listings in the SR3 category

Re: The last Alfa to race at Le Mans

I did find a few from 2000 however they all took part in the FIA's Sportscar Championship which runs to different rules to Le Mans.

I do belive that one Lucchini did intend to run at Le Mans with an Alfa engine, but didn't show up.

Alfa pulled out of grand prix racing (along with Lancia & Mercedes Benz) after that terrible crash in 1955 at Le Mans.

There were definately Alfas entered in the WSC as late as 1977, which went to Le Mans. After that, no idea, sorry.

I would say that that is a Brabham BT48 from about 1978/9 with a V12 Alfa Romeo engine.

Clearly not a works Alfa Team!

Re: The last Alfa to race at Le Mans

Alfa Romeo supplied F1 engines to Brabham in 1976.
Alfa Romeo was a F1 constructor from 1979-1985.
Alfa Romeo supplied F1 engines to Osella from 1983-1988.

I believe that the last Alfa Romeo team car to race a Le Mans was the Tipo 33 TT3 in 1972 entered by Autodelta SpA and driven by Nino Vaccarella and Andrea De Adamich. This was last official team entry and they finished 4. Although not an official Alfa entry,in 1973 Scuderia Brescia Corse entered a 33 TT3 driven by Carlo Facetti, Sergio Morando and Teodoro Zeccoli..
Beyond that it gets more difficult. I am not aware of an Alfa Romeo running at Le Mans after that in any guise. It is possible that there may have been Alfa engined cars, you need to check out if Osella for example supplied engines to anyone.

Bidet: They definately entered the FIA GT Championship in 2008, but I don't know if there was a round at Le Mans.

No they did not. as the rest of my post states the last Alfa Romeo team entry at Le Mans was in 1972 with the Tipo 33.

Also Alfa's did not run at Le Mans in 1955 or in 1954 the last car to run was the 6c in 1953.

I belive the Gillet stopped using Alfa engines in 2004. Switching to BMW, or at least some of them did. They have raced in many FIA GT races (Including the Spa 24hours), but never at Le Mans. The car is a G2 class car, in other words its not an FIA Homolgated GT2 car, but is allowed to race in its own class.

Ah no I'm wrong, they stilled used Alfa engines in 2004 and indeed up untill 2007. In 2008 they ran a Maserati V8

Re: The last Alfa to race at Le Mans

Renone - I agree - however I never said they participated - they announced a withdrawl from Grand Prix racing following the accident.

Also I think the 33 was entered in the 1973 Le Mans as well.

I think you are right. I believe the only 24hr race the Vertigo ran in was at Spa in 2008?

Of course it is.

It's an Alfa powered race car with an engine especially supplied by Alfa Romeo.

If Alfa had 'pulled out they wouldn't supply engines would they ?

Like wise Mercedes McLaren as they are known etc.

Actually the thread asks for the last Alfa to run at Le Mans,

not team

Alfa

The references to the other cars were as a response to another reply.

There was a classic race day at Le Mans, I think it was last year - some classic Alfa's may have run then

Good point!
Yes, they have a Classic Le Mans (since 2002?). I know for a fact that a Tipo 33 ran in 2008. So there may well have been one last year.

well at least we can now say that the last Alfa to go round Le Mans was a Tipo 33 in 2008
