Hero or Villian ?..Nigel Mansell

As with most motorsport fan's we have our hero's, and we have our villian's.
My F1 hero of the eightie's was Our Nige, who on a good day could run ring's around his peer's, if thing's weren't that good he'd whinge untill the cow's came home.
The most memorable moment's for me have mostly included Mansell and Senna such as Hungary 1987 where he took Senna by boxing him in behind a back marker and to take the win after qualifying his Ferrari in 14th on the grid.
So Mansell..Hero or Villian and who is your F1 hero.

Whenever i see the front of a Gtv i become sexually aroused.

He did it the hard way, mortgaged his home to pay for his racing. He's a hero all right

I like him, he wasn't the easiest to like though. But as he has got older he has got cooler I think. And one of the all time great racers, if Senna didn't tragically die I don't think MS would have been as succesful as he was.

Definitely a hero. Who can forget him trying to push his car over the finish line. I cant think of anyone who would do that now. Mind you, health and safety probably forbids it.

Re: Hero or Villian ?..Nigel Mansell

You could never crticise Mansell for not trying. He always gave 100% on the track and he had ability. For that reason I am happy to call him a great driver. He also did a great job for Damon Hill and Williams after Senna's death in helping Damon to sharpen up his act and the Williams team in general to reform and refocus after such a massive blow. He helped get the 'Buzz' back into the team.

On the other hand had he been a bit more of a 'thinker' like Prost, he would have not had to wait until 92 for his championship. He also had a dreadful chip on his shoulder about something, and he never entirely overcame this, so I never warmed to him as an individual.

Nobody is perfect however, and 'Our Nige' was great to watch behind the wheel whatever he drove....So Hero...by a short nose and a moustache

Must admit, I found him really boring, both ON and Off the track, but we all see things differently !!!!!......

Re: Hero or Villian ?..Nigel Mansell

possibly the last great 'oldschool' guts and glory racer, i only saw him race live once, when he stacked his mondeo into the bridge at donny, but i loved watching him race on the telly, if he was racing today he would be contantly getting disqualified for daring to 'race'

def a hero, although he could be a [email protected] at times.

Have to agree if the pair of them where still racing into the late 90's I don't think anyone would really be able to keep up. Esp the way both kept pushing each other.

That's interesting - are you sure about that?
As I understood it, when Nigel left Williams there was a bit of bad blood (since Williams had sacked him as champion). Did he really come back and help out Damon?

Re: Hero or Villian ?..Nigel Mansell

I like the way that when he crashed at Donnington he tried to blame Tiff Needell...

Mansell had already lost the car before Tiff hit him. Tiff Had no where to go and merely helped Mansell into the barrier.

Re: Hero or Villian ?..Nigel Mansell

I heard a story that he used to sing nursery rhymes to himself in the car to prevent himself from getting bored. Bored, driving an F1 car?

He may be back behind the wheel racing next year in either of the Le Mans support series (the LMS and ALMS). He and his two sons have already test driven a couple of LMP1 Prototypes including the Ginetta-Zytek Factory Teams' Hybrid Car.

It is true. In the middle of 94 after Senna's untimely death the team were left with Damon Hill as leader ad DC as a rookie number 2, and in a bid to re-focus the team they expensively rehired Mansell and ditched DC. The aim was to help Damon in the title battle against Schumacher, and to give Damon Hill some of the benefits of his race experience. Initially Mansell was somewhat slower than Damon Hill...which was not predicted....but he did win the Australian GP (his last GP win). We all know what MS did to DH.

Then in true Williams style, Mansell was led to believe he would get an offer from Williams for the 95 season only for DC to reinstated as No 2 to Damon Hill. Exit Nigel Mansell from Williams for the second time.

(Re: Mansell/Needell.,,touring cars...I suspect that at that stage of ther careers they were both becoming ..how shall i say...'Accident Prone' in a way that did neither much credit. I'm sure a lot of drivers resented him being there at all)

Never liked him, but I didn't like Senna either. Both handy peddlers though.
