Re: World Rally Great Britain

i do if nobody else does. used to get proper coverage over the entire rally, programmes on friday, saturday and all day sunday. them were the days.

rallying doesnt get the coverage it deserves in my opinion. the best form of motorsport

Re: World Rally Great Britain

Once upon a time the RAC Rally was the rallying equivalent of the London Marathon. I had friends who entered and it was their one chance every year to compare themselves with the best, and it was a proper rally that covered much of the country so that fans from all over could get access to a special stage. It was a big social event for rally fans all over the UK

Nowadays its just a quick flat out sprint for massively expensive cars with just a handfull of top stars.

I used to go and watch for quite a few years at Bramham Park, Olivers Mount, Dalby Forest. It started from Harrogate one year and we all piled down to look at the cars. This year I didn't even know it was on, and frankly I'm not bothered any more, which is a shame.

Re: World Rally Great Britain

i remember going to my first rally, back when it was the Lombard RAC job. probably '92 or '93 i think (i was only 9 or 10), went to the stage that went through the grounds of Chatsworth House, place was caked in snow. good day out, watched some heroic driving by everyone from the leaders right down to the privateers, also some quite spectacular offs as is usually the case with rallying.

then went to the wales rally GB back in 2003 and it was enjoyable but seemed to have lost its magic somehow. but theres nothing like trudging through a muddy forest in the welsh mountains to go and watch expensive hi-tech kit sliding on gravel while spitting huge flames out the back.

Re: World Rally Great Britain

Everyone I know (hardcore rally competitors, marshals and spectators) gave the Rally GB Wales a very wide birth again this year.

If you want to get the atmosphere you used to get on the classic stages, go out on the Roger Albert Clark (R.A.C.) for historic cars or the Lombard Rally for Endurance cars and historics. Both rallies are a true test of man and machine and have a fantastic atmosphere out in the stages.

The 3 day, made for TV format of the WRC these days has most of the once great events (The Monte, 1000 Lakes, RAC, Acropolis) a shadow of their former selves and the Safari is no more.

This year actually got some cheap flights out to Sardinia, better than paying £90 for the privilege of parking in a ditch and being made to stand in a 'sheep pen' in Wales.
